[arrl-odv:33511] American Radio Club - competing organization?

Ham radio Prep, started by two relatively new hams has now formed their own radio club. $48 per year you get their tech training plus they have a spectrum defense fund and other benefits. They bill monthly rather than yearly. I wonder how their spectrum defense efforts will work, whether they will cooperate with us or whether they will compete. Take a look: https://americanradioclub.com/

Looks like they are using ARRL VEC so we are getting a small chunk of the pie. Or at least they have photos of our forms. Mark, HDX On Mon, Mar 14, 2022 at 6:47 AM rjairam@gmail.com <rjairam@gmail.com> wrote:

They aren’t. They provide training for exams that are administered by any VEC. They don’t coordinate exams themselves. They train and guide candidates. On Mon, Mar 14, 2022 at 9:55 AM Mark J Tharp <kb7hdx@gmail.com> wrote:

This was inevitable and should be anticipated as to other national ham radio organizations spinning up in the next few years. It would be interesting to see if they are organized as a non-profit or a conventional business start-up. As to spectrum defense, it will also be interesting to see what they plan to do and with what level of funding. Having representation or expertise of any level in Washington alone will be likely more than they might raise or afford for some time, if at all. As a separate matter, the Radio Club of America, ("RCA") the oldest and most historic such radio organization in the country, might have something to say about their choice of possibly confusingly similar names. The RCA name is a registered US trademark as well. Better known (or started as) as "Ham Radio Prep" I think. They have a great book on offer: $50. book on Amazon to learn how to use a $25. Baofeng handheld. The book has no apparent author identification, other than "American Radio Club". https://tinyurl.com/yc8ywc7x. 73, Dave K3ZJ On 3/14/22, 9:47 AM, "arrl-odv on behalf of rjairam@gmail.com" <arrl-odv-bounces@reflector.arrl.org on behalf of rjairam@gmail.com> wrote: Ham radio Prep, started by two relatively new hams has now formed their own radio club. $48 per year you get their tech training plus they have a spectrum defense fund and other benefits. American radio club is a project of ham radio prep. I’ve spoken to them and they’ve asked me to collaborate with them on american radio club (but I can’t obviously because it would heavily conflict with ARRL.)
From what I understand this is meant to draw in hams who want a fresh look on the radio club. The part that caught me by surprise was the spectrum defense. I definitely would not want someone lobbying counter to us because I feel that it would weaken ham radio lobbying in general.
They’re also heavily focused on TEOTWAWKI and the prepper crowd rather than ham radio as a hobby or scientific endeavor. Also the last thing we want is a K6UDA style of outfit that gets fake victories and claims that they’re winning and ARRL is losing. One of my close friends is a former member of the NRA BOD. He’s had to fend off nonsense hurled at the NRA because of Dudley Brown and his organization (National Association for Gun Rights - NAGR) that just goes around saying the NRA is incompetent and then uses that to ask for money. That said they could have merit. It could be beneficial if they worked with us, rather than be seen as opposing. There have been competing organizations in the past, the most famous being Glenn Baxter and AARA. But as we know Baxter was a crackpot who repeatedly broke FCC rules and few took him seriously. These guys aren’t. Ria N2RJ On Mon, Mar 14, 2022 at 12:05 PM david davidsiddall-law.com < david@davidsiddall-law.com> wrote:
