[arrl-odv:34982] And yet another threat to ham radio

This is not really a new issue, but this kind of equipment continues to become more serious. Vice Director Cooper brought this to my attention today. See the "Ham Radio" frequencies but license free offering which claims to be different than FRS and the usual license free offering. It is the usual wide-open dual band Chinese special. It incorrectly summarizes the mistaken view that in an emergency, anyone can use ham radio frequencies without a license to talk with family and friends - during a national emergency with grid down. Not what the rules provide for actually. Take a look at this ad from My Emergency Radio. Scroll down on the site to see what they claim it covers and that no ham license is needed but it uses ham frequencies. The claims from "customers" are entertaining to say the least. The tiny, fine print at the very bottom suggest the sellers know it may not be legal to use even in a widespread emergency just because your cell phone is down. https://myemergencyradio.com/ Bob Famiglio, K3RF, 610-359-7300 ARRL Atlantic Division Director www.QRZ.com/db/K3RF
