[arrl-odv:34863] Member Receiving QST in First Class Mail?

Received interesting input today. A member commented on receiving QST lately in a white envelope with $2.94 postage. The member multiplied the $2.94 by 12 months, and noticed the cost of sending the magazine for a year was $35.28 plus the cost of 12 large envelopes and the effort needed to stuff and prepare them. This is getting close to the $49 a year total dues. This was particularly noticeable with respect to the dues increase survey. Why would a member who is not a Board member or advertiser start receiving QST delivered as First Class Mail? 73, Dick, N6AA

Maybe a Diamond Club member? Mine started coming first class mail when I signed up for Diamond club. 73; Mike W7VO

Anyone donating $500. or more (Diamond Club silver level) is automatically sent their magazine by first class. I requested that mine NOT be sent first class, and this was done. Without knowing the members call it is impossible to determine if this is an oversight, error, issue, or normal. I asked Dick and he replied the member " Doesn't want it revealed. ". So I guess Dick, you will need to validate the members membership status and go from there. It could be a mistake, or it may not. Without knowing the callsign (or name) it's pretty hard to help. Dick, I would ask the member to call membership services themselves and ask the question unless you are able to validate the level of membership yourself. In light of the cost of delivery calculated by Director Norton's constituent, a better inquiry might be: how many QSTs are we delivering every month by First Class? Diane, Bob, Becky could you please advise as to how many per month? ______________________________________ John Robert Stratton N5AUS Director West Gulf Division Office:512-445-6262 Cell:512-426-2028 P.O. The one thing I’d like to see us refrain from on this reflector is the use of anonymous member comments or complaints. This is a board confidential reflector. If you do not trust that your peers can keep a sensitive member matter confidential, please send the issue directly to me for handling. I cannot manage an organization of, and I quote from one Director, “incompetent or lazy” staff members if I don’t know what the issue is and can deal with it directly. We find that once we get past the vitriol that these issues are sometimes communicated to us with, the member is actually fine and happy to have their issue addressed and solved. One thing that works for me is cc:’ing the CEO on a response had having him chiming in with detail via email, and in one case, calling the member. Over communication is okay! It has been my experience that most people don’t expect confidentiality in ARRL matters unless they ask for it. By all means, we should respect that request if that’s the case.
