Media & Public Relations Reported by Allen Pitts, W1AGP Final Field Day hits still trickle in as we all prepare for the Board meeting. Further contact with RTNDA has continued our discussion on having an ARRL presence at their convention and presentation on Amateur Radio uses in news work. Help was given with legislative actions in preparation of information packets and copies of the HR-2160 webinar were made available to those who ask for them. More than the usual percentage of time was needed to respond to an uptick of email inquiries and requests and Media Hits was completed for the month. Production/Editorial Reported by Joel Kleinman, N1BKE Khrystyne Keane wrote and distributed The ARRL Letter, Vol. 28, No. 27, for July 10, 2009. She also voiced and produced ARRL Audio News for July 10. Lab Reported by Ed Hare, W1RFI Electronic Publication Support Zack Lau was busy with customers having software issues. A common problem is Vista's User Account Control interfering with software installation-not allowing registry settings to occur, and not telling the user that there has been a problem. RFI Mike Gruber sent out two RFI letters to power companies in the Hudson Division. Mike Gruberresponded to Laura Smith's request for comments and response to a number of letters to her from electric utilities. These letters were sent to her as a result of FCC letters involving power line noise. Ed and Mike Gruber held a telephone conference with Laura Smith and the head of the FCC Field Office in Kansas City. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the possibility of assisting the FCC in a power line noise case in Coffeyville, Kansas. As previously reported, Laura has requested help in resolving this troublesome case in Coffeyville. Steve Ford reports that the next printing of the ARRL RFI Book will be out by the end of February. He will need corrections no later than November 1st. Web Zack Lau went through the TIS pages and made sure they all had introductions. Mike Gruber was busy reviewing and updating his assigned TIS pages-mostly the RFI related ones. Sales and Marketing Reported by Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R ARRL was represented at Europe's biggest Amateur Radio exhibition, held annually in Friedrichshafen, Germany. This year's convention was held June 26-28. The combined ARRL / IARU exhibit was organized by Dave Patton, NN1N and Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R. The exhibit team included ARRL officials Kay Craigie, N3KN--First Vice President and her husband Carter Craigie, N3AO, Rod Stafford, W6ROD--International Affairs Vice President, and Frank Butler, W4RH--Honorary Vice President. The IARU officials included Tim Ellam, VE6SH--President, Ole Garpestad, LA2RR-Vice President, and Larry Price, W4RA--President Emeritus. Additional team members included Lee Ciereszko, DA1TCW / N4TCW, Hal Turley, W8HC and Rick Barnett, N0RB. Attendance was reported to be 17,400-up a bit from last year (2008--17,100). ARRL collected 76 membership applications-35 new. We also returned with service requests from at least 20 members-everything from circulation and publication inquiries to plaque requests. Once again, Mitch Wolfson DJ0QN/K7DX, organized an ARRL/VEC-sponsored examination held during the convention weekend. There were 30 candidates, earning 19 US licenses (5 Technician, 7 General, and 7 Extra). Dave Patton and his contingent of volunteer card checkers processed a whopping 247 ARRL DXCC applications. Some photos are posted on the web at www.arrl.org/blog. ARRL earned just over $16k during the first 6 months of the year in royalties, bounties and renewals associated with the ARRL Visa credit card, issued by US Bank. Our acquisition of new credit card holders is up over the same period last year. Overall credit card spending is down 18%. Open cards total 2,115. Our own email solicitations continue to be the best source of new card acquisition. A summary of some survey data and analysis was prepared to assist our German sister society, the Deutscher Amateur Radio Club. The information will assist the society with their internal membership planning activities. August QST has been received at the warehouse. The Warehouse crew fulfilled 658 packages for publication and product orders, and shipped 689 free book membership premiums and QST mailing supplements. Quotes are being obtained to make repairs to the Clark Forklift--removing a leaky tilt cylinder and then repacking it. ARRL Conventions Date Name Division City State ARRL HQ Rep. Despite this, we have had issues with our ISP's spam filter being locked down too tight; this has resulted in approximately 150 emails asking for assistance with log submission. This is a recurrence of an issue we had during the ARRL DX contest. I have asked Andy Shefrin to contact our ISP and open the spam filter a bit. 1,000 logs have been received for the June VHF QSO Party. The log submission deadline is July 15. 2009 ARRL DX CW Results are now online at www.arrl.org/contests/results Contest Branch Manager Sean Kutzko, KX9X, will be on a VHF grid DXpedition to FN45 in northern New Hampshire this weekend. He will be taking part in the CQ WW VHF Contest with 100 watts on 6 and 2 meters SSB/CW with beam antennas, and will be back in the office on Tuesday, July 21. W1AW Thanks to Chuck Skolaut, KØBOG, and Dan Henderson, NN1N, for covering the Monday through Friday morning shifts for the vacationing Joe Carcia, NJ1Q. Scott worked on fast and slow code practice files for the middle part of the month of July. He worked the Monday through Friday early afternoon shifts (in addition to his regular night shifts) for Joe Carcia. Scott also continued assisting the DXCC branch with plaque processing. Field Organization/Public Service Team Frank Piper, KI8GW, of Pickerington, has been appointed Section Manager of the ARRL Ohio Section. He will serve the balance of the term of Joe Phillips, K8QOE, who became a Silent Key on June 20. Dave Patton, consulted with Great Lakes Division Director Jim Weaver, and made the appointment effective July 7. Lawrence Macionski, W8LM, of Wichita, has been nominated to run for the office of Kansas Section Manager. Nominations for this Section Manager election cycle are due at ARRL Headquarters by September 4. With more openings on 10 meters lately, we are beginning to get more reports of unlicensed operation on the band. Also ARRL HQ received several reports of unlicensed bear hunters once again heard using 2 meters in several different sections. A report of a swooshing sounding signal on a number of the bands came in from a North Dakota station and was forwarded to our monitors to check. There is a continuous carrier on 2 meters in California, and it's under investigation by local Official Observers along with a possible jamming signal on 14.193 MHz.
