Folks: I don't usually respond to messages but I agree with Director Norton's opinions. We will incur the cost of 12 or so more airplane round-trip flights and 28 to 30 or so additional hotel room-nights, plus a few additional meals. There will be no attendees who live locally. 2) We will subject approximately 7 members of our paid staff to 2 days each of travel. Whereas most of them are salaried, and may fly home on their own time, they will spend a day each, traveling to the meeting rather than performing useful work in Newington. The MVP manager, if he attends only the PSC meeting, will spend 3 workdays to cover a one-day meeting. 3) We lose the face-to-face interface with other staff members at the committee meetings, and at the board meeting itself if otherwise appropriate. 4) We lose the efficiency of a single airfare covering both new board-member initiation at headquarters and meeting attendance. There will be at least one new member. 5) A significant contributor to flight delays will still be weather at home or connecting airports. 6) Once one reaches the destination, the meetings are held indoors, where the weather outside is not a factor. As much as I've never been in New Orleans, other than the airport, and might enjoy seeing it, I really can't justify the additional cost to the League membership and the considerable impact on the paid senior staff. I consider attending meetings in Hartford an expected cost of being on the ARRL board. 73, Dick Norton, N6AA On Fri, Jul 29, 2011 at 6:17 PM, Sumner, Dave, K1ZZ <dsumner@arrl.org> wrote:
Folks,
Bylaw 25 applies:
25. The Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors shall be held in the vicinity of Newington, Connecticut, beginning on the 3rd Friday of January. The Second Meeting of the Board of Directors shall be held in the vicinity of Newington, Connecticut, beginning on the 3rd Friday of July. The places of the meetings shall be designated by the President and notified by the Secretary. The times and places of the meetings may be changed provided that specific provision is made therefor by (1) majority vote of the Directors at the next preceding Annual or Second Meeting, or (2) majority vote of the Directors by mail initiated by the Executive Committee or on petition of at least five Directors, such mail vote to be taken at least 60 days previous to the date proposed for the meeting.
So if five of you want to get together and propose something, have at it. Please try to avoid cities where there might be an NFL postseason game played that weekend. If you want staff to research specific locations for cost comparison purposes, let me know.
