[arrl-odv:31591] Speakers Bureau

Good afternoon. Today at my mgmt. meeting we discussed updating the webpage associated with the Speakers Bureau. We find that requests are coming into the building through uncoordinated paths and we need to quickly get on top of this. Currently, the list is out of date, short, and generic in nature. A single point of contact for ALL speaking engagements is not clear, so requestors take a dive into the building to see who they can get. We will be updating the list, adding specific presentations that can be given, and creating a process in house to evaluate requests, approve content (especially staying on topic as opposed to fireside chat style presentations), and then schedule. We have also upgraded our in house ability to give Zoom presentations, although we know more work is required for the quality level we are striving for (lighting and camera placement in particular). In our discussion, we concluded that some of the best subject matter experts sit on our board. I won't detail the list of topics here, but suffice it to say, we believe there are many opportunities for board members to give short-to-medium length presentations virtually to clubs or organizations. We also recognize that there is a bias against board members doing presentations in other board members geographic regions. The question is: if we can collaborate on establishing a set of guidelines with regard to board members giving very specific presentations and agreeing NOT to engage in matters related to ARRL but deferring those to the local Director, would we be able to add board level speakers to our Speakers Bureau? We would like to successfully agree to this as our next area of interest with board engagement is in doing something similar through the Learning Center: Board member SME's doing presentations or courses on specific subjects, but NOT on matters of ARRL business. Thanks David

In my first year, I fielded twenty or so requests from within the Division for presentations and presented at ARRL Forums at hamfests. Many of these included requests for interactive public comment on ARRL policy issues. As has been established as permissible by prior Board actions, I have expressed my opinions as such to my constituency. I will continue to do so and will continue to speak out on ARRL related matters. I would appreciate notification and the invitation to participate in any Director speaking to cross-divisional groups on ARRL matters. Thus far, this has not been a problem for me. I remain a staunch supporter of transparency to all members. Hi David I give technical seminars all over the country, virtually. My area of expertise is software defined radio (as an end user, systems integrator and having contacts with three manufacturers). I also give presentations on ham radio systems integration and software for ham radio. I also have a network of friends who I call on to do presentations. I also leverage my section TC (W2AEW) who has a 128k strong subscriber YouTube channel. I absolutely avoid all ARRL business and refer those to the director in charge of that division, especially if they are in attendance. My current practice is to have the club requesting to CC the director or ask them before I agree. I’ve had one or two cases where this has slipped but for the most part it has worked out well. I think that a simple notification to the director would suffice and coming via HQ. If they object then we can deal with that internally at the board level. But yes, a speakers bureau is sorely needed. We need a central clearing house for these requests so that volunteers and staff can fulfill them. I was under the impression that the events department already does that? 73 Ria N2RJ On Tue, Jan 5, 2021 at 1:03 PM Minster, David NA2AA (CEO) <dminster@arrl.org> wrote:

I’m happy to give technical presentations in any number of areas, from basic physics of radio to operating technique. I have maybe 15 different talks ready to go at any time. I’d be happy to provide abstracts when appropriate.
