[arrl-odv:32132] March 11, 2021 - ARRL Letter "Monster Antenna" Problems

The March 11, 2021 ARRL Letter contains an article about a "Monster Antenna" that is purported to deliver a "Monster Signal." The article does not appear to have been adequately technically edited. First of all, the impedances are described with "W," instead of the proper Ohms, or the Greek letter, Omega. This is likely a typographical error made by someone unfamiliar with electronics. Second, adding claims like "Monster Signal" is at best misleading. An antenna made of 1900 feet of wire is likely to have peaks and nulls in it's pattern, but does not radiate a "Monster Signal" in desired directions as a rotatable antenna could. Where the antenna may to be an interesting construction project, this article should have been edited by technical personnel before being sent to League members. The ARRL has a history of technical review of information it provides. This article does not live up to the League's standards. 73, Dick, N6AA

Hi Dick, I suspect that copy/paste from a word processor or dtp software was the likely culprit. There is a proper way to do this and that is to use Unicode characters. The web version says “ohms” so someone probably noticed it and made the fix.
