"Strictly speaking, 12 AM denotes midnight and 12 PM denotes noon, but there is sufficient confusion over these uses to make it advisable to use 12 Noon and 12 Midnight where clarity is required." Source: American Heritage Dictionary. 1990. 423.1 R573 I was taught that 12 PM was noon and 12 AM was midnight. I guess it's a sign of impending old age when something you learned was an absolute, no longer is. For whatever it is worth, I have a policy of replying in some way to every E-mail/snail mail message sent me by a GLD member. Generally speaking, I extend this to nonmembers whom I also let know that I would most likely consider their thinking more seriously if they were members. Aside from the above, I have one comment regarding protocol for communications from the League. I just reviewed the W1AW operating schedule. In full deference to whomever (Joe?) who makes up these schedules, when the heck is 12PM? I know of 12M (noon) and 12MM (midnight) but given that each 12 is right "in between AM and PM (or PM and AM) which of these is 12PM? I fully know about 12:01AM and 12:01PM, but . . . Or have we totally capitulated to ignorant computers that know no more than we program them to know? Seriously, though, shouldn't we technical communications types get it right in what we write? Sorry. Its early in the year and I haven't gotten tired, yet. AMATEUR RADIO: The only fail-safe communications system in the world. ARRL: The reason Amateur Radio is!
