RE: [arrl-odv:16849] Re:RE: Status of Standing Order 63?

Kay, Rod and Dave are certainly correct that we have thousands of volunteers who make certain operations of ARRL possible. God bless good volunteers. I dont sense, though, that Dick has the type of tasks currently done by our volunteer force in mind. I may be wrong, of course. Just as a thought, even though volunteerism is in broad usage through the Field Organization, Divisions and to an extent at HQ, I wonder if it isnt time to do a little out-of-the-box thinking on this subject to see if there are not additional areas in which volunteers could assist. ARRL has many dedicated people who have highly developed skills the League needs. As one example, we have computer-guru members who have managed programming needs for major cities and companies. I know that some of these would be eager to take on appropriate tasks from time to time. I suspect the same can be said of members who excel in other relevant disciplines maybe in developing scientifically-valid opinion or other polls. Maybe A&F should undertake a study to recommend which, if any, categories of professional-level tasks would be appropriate to ask members to perform. The results of the study would be passed on to the Board for consideration. There is no question that sound judgment would need to be exercised when determining which (again, if any) tasks should be assigned to volunteers. I am not so naïve as to believe we should task volunteers to projects indiscriminately, but I equally feel comfortable they could perform appropriate tasks with great success and benefit to the League.
