[arrl-odv:24090] FW: Re: Android - Repeater Directory Marketing

I asked Bob Inderbitzen to respond to Director Norton's inquiry. Users who own a current Repeater Directory enjoy the full functionality of the app, which is controlled through the distribution of a unique activation code bundled with every physical book. Each code permits full use of the app on up to 4 devices. Users may also purchase a code directly from ARRL for $9.95. Google receives no consideration for these sales--which we treat as one-year subscriptions to the ARRL Repeater Directory database. As such, obtaining the app from the Google Play store is "FREE." I will contact the app's developer to discuss changes to the description of the app in Google's store that will help make it clear that the app functions in a limited way until a subscription is activated with the purchase of a book or code. However, I note in passing that Dick's source is incorrect in that the 3.3 rating is out of 5, not 10. Also, the "5" ratings outnumber the "1" ratings. The basic app is free but to unlock all of the bands and also get the updates you have to buy into the service. Not a real clean WY of handling it but it works. It states price: free You then download the directory, and get the message, "If you want 2-meters and 70-centimeters, you need to pay an additional $10." Note that realistically, the only repeaters people are interested in are on 2 and 70 cm. This has apparently not been a hit with users. The directory is rated at 3.3 stars, out of 10, and the negative comments relate to the misleading "free." I would suggest simply listing the price at $10, and possibly below that, note that a sample directory with no 2 and 70 is available for free. Being straightforward with the membership and users is probably a good idea. 73, Dick Norton, N6AA _______________________________________________ arrl-odv mailing list arrl-odv@reflector.arrl.org https://reflector.arrl.org/mailman/listinfo/arrl-odv
