[arrl-odv:20719] Any update?

We're a week away from the April 25th deadline we set for information we requested from hams so we could respond to the FCC's request for input on Emergency Communications by Amateur Radio and Impediments to Amateur Radio Communications. How are we doing? I heard we have received a large number of responses. Are there specific things we still need that have not come in the input received so far? -- Tom ===== e-mail: k1ki@arrl.org ARRL New England Division Director http://www.arrl.org/ Tom Frenaye, K1KI, P O Box J, West Suffield CT 06093 Phone: 860-668-5444

Tom, Dan Henderson is on his way out to a convention out West now, but before he left he gave me some updates. We have as of yesterday 696 responses to our request for CC&R horror stories, including PDF copies of CC&R restrictions on many of them. We also have 226 comments on the Emcomm online form. The plan is for Dan, Brennan and me to review the CC&R horror story responses, separate the wheat from the chaff, and write up some of the best ones in narrative format for inclusion in an appendix to our comments. The emcomm comments will be reviewed by Dan, Mike Corey and Allen Pitts and the information from those will be used in the text of their draft of the emcomm part of our comments in this docket. The high number of CC&R form responses is gratifying. I wasn't expecting this volume. It is important because the only practical way to quantify the CC&R problem is anecdotally. So, we can make good use of this high volume of responses. I am deep into the drafting of the CC&R part of the comments and I hope that Mike, Dan and Allen are beginning the emcomm part. We are going to answer the FCC's questions from the PN, but not all of those questions make sense, at least as regards the CC&R part of the comments. I have had some extensive conversations with Cross at FCC about the PN, and I believe that he is in our corner on the CC&R issue. He shares the same concern I have, which is that the FCC has asked for comments on other regulatory factors which might inhibit Amateur emcomm. This is a distraction that has energized a number of emcomm people who want to talk about restrictions on digital emissions, etc. Dan and I worry that this might distract FCC from the conclusions that we want them to draw about the CC&R part. 73, Chris W3KD Christopher D.
