I have two brief comments about the AD situation. The first is that I had initially enlisted a substantial number of ADs throughout the Division and tasked them primarily with being my eyes and ears. They were to tip me off to complaints and ideas that were being kicked around by members. As others of you may say, this sounded like a good idea. Even after being fairly selective on whom I appointed, it worked only with one or two people. The second comment is that I've always believed in having a "sunshine clause" in my appointments. Every appointment I make comes with the understanding it expires at the end of my term. Therefore, every appointment I made during my first term expired at the end of the first term. I did not summarily kick everyone out at the end of my first term. In nearly all instances, I invited the appointee to tell me if they wished to continue in the job. If they did, they were reappointed or are redirected toward a different position. For example, right now I am going through the process of inviting most of my AD appointees to become Legislative Action folks, instead. This is working to a reasonable extent. If an appointee does not respond to two invitations to re-up, I assume he/she has resigned. I did not force reappointment on them. This got rid of much of the driftwood. Since the division is so large, they used them to be their rep in areas that they seldom traveled to. I have continued that practice for only a few areas. What I try to do is find AD's that have expertise in a particular area to aid me in keeping up on the latest. For example, I have an expert in digital modes that I stay in close contact with. I have another that is a wizard in balloon launches. As for perks, I don't see much that we can offer them. I make sure they have a badge and that they are invited to division cabinet meetings. (They seldom attend) The question that I have is what do you do with those that are inactive. I don't want to fire them. No sense in making them angry when it is no cost to keep them. Some of those just want the honor of saying they are AD's. These are mostly former SM's and other office holders. The result is that I keep them until they are SK. Hi Bruce,
I wonder what the value of an "Assistant Director" is today, given the communication capabilities we now have.
Now, I'm not suggesting there is a problem with our current arrangement or
advocating any change, I'm just asking the question as it has been several
years since I was a Director and had direct involvement with AD's and I really don't know how you guys use them these days.
Coming up with a "perk" can be tough. Obviously if they serve the League we want to acknowledge that service with something, but beyond a League callsign badge, certificate and the ARRL Letter I really don't have any thoughts on what would be appropriate.
I'd also be interested in hearing what the other Directors are doing these
days as well.

I'm making some Assistant Director changes after Wade's passing. Now that the ARRL Letter is widely available, one of the past perks of being an AD is no longer anything special. In fact, is there much more than the appointment itself that is inherently of value and received by all ADs?
I've been thinking it might be good to send them copies of IN. This would be somewhat equivalent to reception of the ARRL Letter in the past. This could be accomplished by manually forwarding to them, or maybe we could and would want to set it up to occur automatically from Hq.
Do we have any policies or reasons for NOT spreading IN beyond the staff and board family? Also I'd be interested in hearing of any things you do especially for ADs, either here or offline to
