Regulatory Information Manager Dan Henderson, N1ND Since returning to work after surgery in mid-October, things have been busy. First, thanks to all for your thoughtful messages and good wishes. They helped the healing process go easier. Once getting through the email and telephone backlog, several Volunteer Counsel records were added and/or updated. We can always use additional VCs as well as Volunteer Consulting Engineers in every section and division. We updated the information on reciprocal operating in several countries. Several questions on reciprocity were also handled. Presentations were prepared for speaking engagements at "Hamjam" - a one-day seminar held November 9 in the Atlanta, GA area - and for the Indiana Section Convention at the Ft. Wayne Hamfest over the weekend of November 15-17. Several phone calls were received related to some potential problems from unhappy amateurs in the area around Beale AFB in California related to repeater coordination and the PAVE PAWS situation. At this time, no action is required by the ARRL, but we will continue to monitor the situation. Several queries were received about the inclusion of digital repeaters in the northern California area in the upcoming Repeater Directory. These were referred to the appropriate department. After being reviewed by the Centennial Convention Committee, we began sending out notices of acceptance to several proposals submitted for inclusion in the Convention program. Approximately 40 hours of forums have been accepted and an addition 20 hours still being pursued. Approximately a dozen proposals were declined for inclusion. Media and PR Sean Kutzko, KX9X Sean Kutzko spent much of last week on the phone to national and international media outlets, promoting the Philippine Amateur Radio Association's (PARA) role in response to Typhoon Haiyan. National Public Radio's "Weekend Edition Sunday" and the BBC World Service both aired interviews with PARA officials, and ARRL Emergency Preparedness Manager Mike Corey, KI1U, was interviewed for an NPR affiliate station's local current affairs show in New Jersey that covers part of the NYC market. That 15-minute interview was recorded on Thursday, November 15 and aired Saturday, November 16. Allen Pitts is making final edits on the ARRL Centennial video. Senior staff at ARRL have viewed it and made comments and suggestions; those are being incorporated into the final cut. Production & Editorial Schoenfeld, Becky, W1BXY The January 2014 issue of QST has been uploaded to the printer. Lab Reported by Ed Hare, W1RFI Product Review Bob Allison completed testing of the first Arduino based HF transceiver. A data table and charts were compiled and sent off to the Product Review Editor and the manufacturer. Bob also started testing of the very first HF/VHF/UHF transceiver that features a touch screen. Membership Contact On Thursday, November 14th, an electrical engineering class from the University of Hartford visited the ARRL Laboratory to learn about the various modes of transmissions used by radio Amateurs. Bob Allison demonstrated several transceivers, one using PSK-31, much to the delight of the class. After the demonstrations, a couple of students asked Bob how to become a Radio Amateur. RFI Mike Gruber completed a report for Kermit Carlson on ComEd power line noise cases. Mike Gruber received a phone call from a reporter from the Wall Street Journal, Thomas Gryta. He is doing a story on RFI, primarily involving cell towers and consumer devices. Mike also suggested Mike Martin as a good resource. Although it was apparent that the focus of his story would not include Amateur radio, he is going to interview Tom Thompson, WØIVN on grow light RFI. Sales and Marketing Reported by Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R Yvette Vinci prepared the email notification for the December 2013 digital edition of QST, distributed to ARRL members on Friday, November 15. The distribution list included 113,765 members. A planned, yearend membership campaign is being prepared for mailing December 16. Diane Petrilli and Jackie Ferreira have prepared a handful of email solicitations promoting membership and publications, sent or queued-up for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. Summary of warehouse fulfillment activity (reported by Steve Capodicasa): Week of Packages fulfilled Member Premiums 11/11/2013 1,643 249 Membership & Volunteer Programs Reported by Dave Patton, NN1N Field Organization/Public Service Team Chuck Skolaut compiled and forwarded the monthly Official Observer summary to all OOs, OOCs, and Section Managers. Radio amateurs in Eastern New York and Eastern Massachusetts successfully completed requirements to become Official Observers this past week. Documentation was received regarding interference being heard on 40 and 75 meters in Western Washington from an OO there who used direction finding techniques to close in on a local source. Questions received and dealt with included virtual amateur radio, operation overseas, antenna restrictions, and information on the OO program. Leona Adams and the Field Organization Team are preparing to count ballots for the Tennessee Section Manager election on Tuesday, November 19. Steve Ewald received and compiled Field Organization reports for October activity reports for January QST.
