10 APR 2007 - 1615 CDT A local ham friend who works at Fermi National Accelerator Lab sent me this URL: http://my.inil.com/~torpor-skog/lightbulb.htm The topic discussed there is the broadband RFI that is generated by the HV chopper power supply in compact fluorescent light bulbs now being used to reduce the consumption of electricity. I found only one error in the discussion. Most of the CF bulbs on sale in this area do not contain mercury. I have a couple of them installed as a trial in my house. One is a ceiling light in the unfinished part of my basement about 16 feet from my radio console. The other is installed in the garage. Neither light is turned on for long periods of time and so far I have not yet noticed any RFI above what I see as band noise on the HF bands. However, if they become widely used, I would expect to hear at least a higher noise floor? 73 - Dick, W9GIG
