An ad was completed to help introduce the new ARRL Begali Key in June QST. A sales promotion using World Amateur Radio Day as a theme contributed to 74 of the 453 orders received during the last weekend. Overhead banners and posters are being prepared for ARRL EXPO at Dayton Hamvention. Diane Petrilli and Cassandra Parkman have been assembling registration materials for ARRL's big team of staff and volunteers supporting our exhibits and activities at Hamvention. The NASA Johnson Space Center has confirmed that Astronaut Mike Fincke, KE5AIT, has been approved to attend Hamvention as a guest of ARRL. Fincke is scheduled to give a presentation on Saturday afternoon. Debra Johnson and Bob Inderbitzen have also arranged for 16 young hams to have lunch with the astronaut following the Youth Forum organized by Carole Perry, WB2MGP. Bob Inderbitzen and Harold Kramer traveled to New York City for a day, to attend a seminar sponsored by the Media and Content Marketing Association. The panelists, who shared best practices and experiences with email marketing and digital publishing, included Vice Director Michael Lee, AA6ML. He worked the late afternoon/night shifts on Wednesday through Friday for the vacationing Scott Gee. Joe also installed a repaired Icom IC-PW1 amplifier in Studio One. He had also been in contact with the author of fldigi - the software used to transmit the W1AW digital bulletins - to resolve an issue with the program locking up during transmissions. Joe continues with the research of missing W1AW/portable LoTW QSOs for amateurs inquiring about them. Field Organization/Public Service Team Leona Adams reports that Phil Minch, K6MUG, of Long Beach, California, has been nominated to run for the next term of office as Section Manager of Los Angeles. Eastern Washington Section Manager Mark Tharp, KB7HDX, has been nominated to run for another term of office. Petitions for this particular election cycle are due at ARRL Headquarters by Friday, June 6, and new terms will begin October 1. One radio amateur from Tennessee successfully completed requirements to become an Official Observer this past week. We received word that the Orange Section OOC was instrumental in locating interference the Orange County Sherriff's office was experiencing on their commercial frequency. The OOC received several nice thank you messages, and the incident was the subject of an article in the local RACES newsletter. We also received a complaint about interference on 3.847 MHz which will be checked out. A report was received from an Eastern Pennsylvania ham regarding an unknown pulsed type signal on 5403.5 MHz. It was later identified as Over the Horizon Radar from China via a remote receiver in Japan. A number if queries were received regarding a station on 14.313 MHz running as a beacon. The FCC was aware of it. Questions arose over repeater trustees, digital frequencies, overseas operation, and antenna zoning. Supplies were sent to several Official Observers. Chuck Skolaut and Steve Ewald conducted one morning code each practice at W1AW, and Chuck also hosted a guest operator during a morning shift. Steve also received and compiled monthly Field Organization Reports for June QST. Editorial work continues on the 2014 Simulated Emergency Test Results article that's scheduled for July QST.
