[arrl-odv:34880] King Hussein's Equipment Donated to RSGB for Display

ODV, Thought this would be of interest. The Radio Society of Great Britain announced earlier today that Queen Noor of Jordan is donating the amateur radio equipment of the late King Hussein to the Society. It will be on permanent display at the RSGB National Radio Centre, which reports having had over 72,000 visitors in 2022. RSGB press release at this link: https://rsgb.org/main/blog/news/rsgb-notices/2023/06/13/radio-society-of-gre... Unlike some of the honorary hams among royalty, Hussein was a real ham and could hold his own in any ham radio discussion. 73, Dave K3ZJ David R. Bob Naumann and I discussed this yesterday evening. These are the kinds of exhibits that our historical collection would benefit from. Bob has a great story about a contester who worked JY1 back in the day and treated him as if he was a Slim… JY1 responded “NO! I am the KING! I am the KING!” 😊 From: arrl-odv <arrl-odv-bounces@reflector.arrl.org> On Behalf Of david davidsiddall-law.com Sent: Tuesday, June 13, 2023 11:08 PM To: arrl-odv@reflector.arrl.org <arrl-odv-bounces@reflector.arrl.org> Subject: [arrl-odv:34880] King Hussein's Equipment Donated to RSGB for Display ODV, Thought this would be of interest. I also had a contest QSO with Hussein. He answered my canned “CQ Contest” in the middle of the night on 20 meters. I had met him a few years earlier and immediately recognized his very deep voice. I imagine he must have had many funny encounters on the air and probably enjoyed them. I was monitoring the Tysons Corner repeater (that was a thing in the old days) when JY1 came on and started chatting with some of the locals. One of the guys actually asked him how he got his license to operate in the U.S. and why he wasn’t signing “portable”. If Hussein was like Barry Goldwater, that was all well and good. One time I sat with Goldwater killing time before a meeting and he decided to get on 10 meters. The ops in Europe had no idea (“What do you do there in Washington, Barry?”) until the U.S. guys found him and started falling all over themselves. 73, Dave K3ZJ From: "Minster, David NA2AA (CEO)" <dminster@arrl.org> Date: Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at 11:10 AM To: "david@davidsiddall-law.com" <david@davidsiddall-law.com>, "arrl-odv@reflector.arrl.org" <arrl-odv-bounces@reflector.arrl.org> Subject: RE: [arrl-odv:34880] King Hussein's Equipment Donated to RSGB for Display Bob Naumann and I discussed this yesterday evening.
