[arrl-odv:21974] Colorado floods

Mike Corey spoke with Colorado Section Manager Jack Ciaccia, WM0G this afternoon. Her are the key points Jack mentioned: - State, county and local EOC's are active and have Amateur Radio support - Many evacuation centers active with Amateur Radio support, primarily packet communications - Estes park and Jamestown are relying solely on Amateur Radio for communications. Jamestown is currently being evacuated - There are currently 3 deaths associated with the flooding - National Guard is starting to get helicopters into affected areas - Boulder County is utilizing ATV drone helicopters to do damage assessment particularly in remote areas. The drones can stay airborne for 5 ½ hours and carry 25 pounds. - The town of Lyons is completely isolated and relying primarily on Amateur Radio for communications - Amateur Radio being used to pass medical traffic for shelters - A recently installed repeater system, the Mountain Community Repeater Network, which was designed to help during fires, is being used to provide critical communications for remote mountain communities. - Currently no HF nets are active - No additional needs for equipment or manpower While the national media is reporting mainly about Boulder County the flooding is more widespread. Several of us attended the Rocky Mountain Division Convention that was held in Estes Park at the end of June. The two main access roads to Estes Park are closed and according to news reports at least one of them is so severely damaged that it may be a long time before it can be reopened. The downtown area is flooded and more rain is coming. As we enjoy our own weekends let's keep our friends in Colorado in our thoughts. 73, Dave K1ZZ
