[arrl-odv:15645] ARRL.org e-mail outage

In case you heard from any members, yesterday (Sunday) from about 8 am until 6:30 pm one of the servers that processes arrl.org e-mail was down, the result of a software failure which resulted in the arrl.org aliases being lost temporarily. This particular outage meant that messages sent to arrl.org addresses were returned to the senders with an "addressee unknown" message. The situation was noted and corrected by the ISP. No arrl.net messages were affected. The server has been back up since last evening and is processing messages routinely. A new script (proprietary commands written specifically for our e-mail processing) is being created today by our ISP to facilitate processing. In addition and a related matter, they will add two more servers to process ARRL-related e-mail messages. ARRL.org messages will be processed on their own unique mail servers at the ISP. While not being the cause of yesterday's outage, the volume of arrl.net messages has grown so dramatically to the point where it is affecting the processing and delivery of arrl.org messages. Current volume is generating almost 1 million attempts to connect to arrl.net addresses per day, with about 80% of them being invalid (not valid arrl.net addresses or obvious spam). Dealing with this wave of messages was slowing arrl.org processing. The new servers will be in place by the end of the week. 73, Barry J.
