Upcoming Meetings and Events Programs & Services Committee: May 1, 2010 @ 8:30am - ARRL HQ Administration &Finance Committee: May 5, 2010 @ 8:30am - ARRL HQ COO The New arrl.org Web site went live Tuesday afternoon. Brennan also participated in a conference call of the narrowband committee and continues research in support of a potential LF allocation. Development Reported by Mary Hobart, K1MMH The Diamond Club has reached $93,431 in gross revenues through early April. The Defense Fund has reached $29,666. Development has received 68 responses from donors planning to attend the annual Donor reception on Thursday, May 13 in Dayton. Arrangements for this event are well in hand. The Diamond Terrace will grow this month when 75 new bricks are installed the week of April 19. The Terrace will be treated for weeds and resanded. Development has received requests for plaques as a result of the annual Member Loyalty mailing. Production/Editorial Reported by Joel Kleinman, N1BKE Khrystyne Keane wrote and distributed The ARRL Letter for April 8, 2010. Sales and Marketing Reported by Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R More membership growth! March ended with 156,775 members--a gain of 579 members over February (the goal for March was to gain 226 members). We are now only 205 members short of the overall March goal of 156,980. Major acquisition sources included renewal notices (late renewals) and new ham mailings. 73% of March expirees paid on time, compared to 71% last March 2009. March product sales were $276,651, exceeding the months sales forecast of $258,633. Direct sales were $132,363; dealer sales were $144,288. The early delivery of the 2010/2011 ARRL Repeater Directory (desktop and pocket-sized editions) contributed $26k in sales this month. The 2010 Field Day product line was introduced in March, contributing over $12,500 in sales. Bob Inderbitzen attended Superfest at Amateur Electronic Supply in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The annual event is billed as an ARRL-affiliated hamfest, and included support from Section Manager Don Michalski W9IXG, Director Dick Isely W9GIG, Carl K9LA and Vicky AE9YL Luetzelschwab, and Ronald Gorski, N9AU of the Greater Milwaukee DX Association. Carl gave a couple of presentations during the event; one on Cycle 24 and the other on propagation planning for DXpeditions. Bob returned with 100 membership applications and a couple of DXCC applications (thanks to K9LA). He was also interviewed on television for Fox 6 News Milwaukee. The team spent dozens of hours testing and relaying feedback as the web site neared launch. A membership mailing is being prepared, testing national vs. local messaging. Directors Sarratt and Weaver contributed suggestions for additional personalization. A large, 50,000 piece membership campaign has been mailed. During the last week, the warehouse crew fulfilled 1,008 packages for publication and product orders, 756 membership premiums, and QST mailing supplements. Dayton Hamvention Update --Diane printed ARRL exhibitor badges, and updated other collateral for the event. --A final hotel rooming list was submitted to Gail Iannone. --The ARRL "Program and Activities Guide" is competed (posted at www.arrl.org/expo). Membership & Volunteer Programs Reported by Dave Patton, NN1N Contest Branch 3,139 electronic logs have been received for the 2010 DX SSB Contest. Paper logs will likely put the total over 3,200. Log submission deadline has passed. 3,937 logs were received for the 2010 DX CW Contest. With 80 paper logs, the total is 4,017. Total DX contest logs received is 7,156, well over a thousand more than any received total in ARRL history. The Rookie Roundup contest is this coming weekend. The getscores.org site is up and running, but the module for real-time adjudication is not completed yet. We are considering the first running of the RR as a "live test" of the event, and have promoted it as such. There will be two ways on getscores.org for participants to log/report their scores. The event will be evaluated after the first running and we will run the August Rookie Roundup using SSB as the mode, to foster growth. ARRL Contest Branch Manager Sean Kutzko, KX9X, encourages all licensed ARRL staff and officers to participate in this weekend's event and work the newly-licensed. We're getting some reports of Sweepstakes Clean Sweep mugs arriving broken in the hands of the recipients. However, the number of damaged mugs does not appear to be abnormally high compared to previous years. We are treating damaged mugs the same as any other customer service issue; if the mug is broken, we'll send them a new one. W1AW Joe processed one Qualifying Run certificate and two endorsements. He processed regular QSL card requests. He updated the web code practice files and their archives. Joe also readied a new PC that is to be used for the W1AW digital bulletin transmissions. On Friday, he and Greg also took care of a small problem with the Kohler generator's engine-heating system. Scott worked on slow and fast code practice files for the middle part of the month of April. He also assisted the DXCC department with the editing of applications. For the week, he processed 162 cards. Field Organization/Public Service Team On Sunday, April 4, a 7.2 earthquake hit the Mexicali/Imperial County area. ARRL Orange Section Manager Carl Gardenias, WU6D, was deployed to the area to assist with radio amateurs who were there or also traveled there to assist in communications for the emergency response effort. ARRL San Diego Section Manager Steve Early, AD6VI, provided informational support and kept in touch with the radio amateurs from San Diego who also responded. Leona Adams reports that Ohio Section Manager Frank Piper, KI8GW, has been nominated to run for new term of office starting in October. There will be an election in Ohio this summer. John Ellis, NP2B, has also been nominated to run for a new term of office as the Section Manager of the Virgin Islands. Radio amateurs from Eastern Pennsylvania and Iowa have recently completed certification to become Official Observers. Chuck Skolaut received the monthly Intruder Watch monitoring report from IARU Region 1. The Western New York OOC reported having received thanks from two radio amateurs who received advisories for operating too close to band edges. This seems to be a problem area for new hams or hams who have been inactive for awhile because they sometimes forget to check changes in the band allocations. Reports of code groups on 3797 kHz were tentatively identified as ship/shore transmissions of German origin. Questions that have come in recently dealt with operating overseas, an American citizen trying to obtain a US license while living abroad, possible operation by Technicians in the Bahamas, and limiting the use of a repeater by an individual.
