Well, our PR machine isn't so bad after all. Virgil is KG4FCD. This letter was published a week after the article Jim cited earlier today. It's at http://tampatrib.com/News/MGA6ANHSMLD.html Dave K1ZZ Interferes With Radio Published: Oct 13, 2003 In your article ``Plugged In'' (Business & Technology, Oct. 6), Will Rodgers did an excellent job of presenting this technology from the standpoint of the power companies. However, he failed to present the dark side of the story, and that is the devastating interference it will cause to radio frequencies. The American Radio Relay League, which is the organization of the nationwide amateur radio community, has conducted tests in several locations where broadband over power line, or BPL, does in fact cause devastating interference to radio frequencies. The industry's unfounded assurances that BPL will not cause interference are no substitute for real-world measurements, and the Federal Communications Commission should rely on documented test results and an impact of interference potential based on scientific, not marketing, criteria. To dramatize its point regarding interference, the ARRL urged the FCC to view videos shot during recent ARRL test and measurement forays to BPL field trial communities in four states. ARRL said the type of degradation expected from BPL would transform 20 meters from a band with worldwide communications capabilities to one of limited regional communication capability. The ARRL called on the FCC to stop acting like a cheerleader for BPL. ``It is past time that the commission acted in its proper role as a steward of the radio spectrum and recognized the interference potential of BPL to the sensitive incumbent licensed services in these bands,'' the league concluded. ``The Commission cannot stretch the Part 15 regulations as far as would be required to accommodate BPL.''< VIRGIL GIBBSSun City Center The writer is public information officer of the West Central section of Amateur Radio. -----Original Message----- From: Haynie, Jim (President) Sent: Monday, October 13, 2003 6:44 PM To: arrl-odv Subject: [ARRL-ODV:9609] BPL http://www.tampatrib.com/MGAABVQNFLD.html This is the third article in 4 days.
