Upcoming Meetings and Events Executive Committee October 7 in Memphis, TN United States Telecommunications Training Institute (USTTI) October 9-13 ARRL HQ Administration &Finance Committee November 18 in Newington, CT Production/Editorial Rick Lindquist reports The ARRL Letter, Vol. 25, No. 35, distributed to 65,200 members on Sep 1. Rick prepared/edited news items on the death of ARRL Midwest Division Director Wade Walstrom, W0EJ; breaking news reports/updates on Amateur Radios response to TS Ernesto; Amateur Radio Awareness Day (updated); Japanese youngsters ARISS QSO; Solar Cycle 24 could already be under way; ARRL Sales and Marketing Manager signs on with Yaesu; Digital Communications Conference 2006 will be silver anniversary event, and several announcements and news briefs. Rick also edited the youth column and the FCC enforcement letters for the Web page and took numerous photos of the W1AW antenna restoration project. With voiceover assistance from Khrystyne Keane, Rick voiced, edited and produced ARRL Audio News for Sep 1. Sales and Marketing Publication and product sales in August topped $216,000; the amount exceeds our mid-year reforecast by nearly $25k. Sales were considerably higher than those recorded in August 2004 and 2005. The Warehouse crew shipped approximately 500 more packages than in August 2005. ARRLs newest title, Getting Started with Ham Radio, by Steve Ford, contributed sales of $12,800 this month. Labor Day holiday weekend sales were spurred on by an email solicitation sent on Friday afternoon. The solicitation included a special offer: $5 flat rate shipping for all orders. Sales via the online store reached $26,574, and a particularly high $60 average order size. For the second year in a row, ARRL has been recognized by Graphic Design USA as a winner of the American Graphic Design Awards. The award specifically honored the graphic designs used in ARRLs convention display and exhibit materials at the ARRL National Convention held at Dayton Hamvention® in 2005. The designs, selected by a nationwide panel of judges, were composed by ARRL Headquarters graphic designers Sue Fagan and Diane Szlachetka. The competition is among the most prestigious design awards. It is among the most selective, too, as only 10% of the thousands of entries were honored this year. Marketing collateral has been produced to help introduce ARRLs upcoming book, More Vertical Antenna Classics--a collection of articles from QST, QEX and the National Contest Journal, as well as several ARRL Antenna Compendium publications. The book will be available in October. A new membership solicitation to 50,000 lapsed members is being developed to General, Advanced and Extra class licensees. Quotes are being gathered for the mailing which is expected to go out by the end of September. Congratulations to the Cathy Stepina of the Circulation staff for the largest membership recruitment in August as a part of the Sales and Marketing new membership recruitment initiative program. Kudos to the entire team for recruiting a total of 133 members!! To date, all the HF antennas (except the 160-meter dipole) on the 120 tower have been replaced. Three (3) of the four (4) on the South tower have been replaced as well. Last up is the North tower, in which two (2) HF and two (2) V/UHF antennas will be replaced. Matt Strelow, KC1XX and Andrew Toth (both of XX Towers) are doing the antenna work. All the new antennas are from M^2 Incorporated. Special thanks to Bob Allison, WB1GCM, Greg Kwasowski, W1GJK, Zack Lau, W1VT and Mike Tracy, KC1SX for their assistance in building the new antennas. Thanks also to HQ staff for their understanding the need to commandeer half of the front parking lot for the antenna construction. And, thanks for their support (both moral and otherwise). In addition to building antennas, Joe also constructed new coaxial pigtails (with new connecting hardware) for all the new antennas. He also coordinated staff time and materials for the antenna work. Scott worked on fast and slow code practice files for the early part of September. He assisted with the construction of some of the new antennas. Scott also handled some evening phone sales calls in the daily 5 PM to 8 PM time slots. He continues processing some shipping forms to assist the Contest department with plaque plates and mailing labels. Field & Educational Services Field Organization/Public Service Team Team members kept an eye on Storm Ernesto through the week as it made progress from Florida to the Carolinas and onward toward the mid-Atlantic states at weeks end. We gathered news reports from the Section Leaders, the Hurricane Watch Net and WX4NHC at the National Hurricane Center and funneled these reports and information to Rick Lindquist at the news desk. Steve Ewald checked into the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster teleconferences. Steve and Chuck Skolaut attended the New England Division Convention in Boxboro the previous weekend and networked with several Section Managers, Field Organization Leaders and appointees who were there. Chuck received an FCC monitoring request for assistance from Official Observers to monitor a 75 meter frequency in the 4th call sign district. Three new Official Observers were added to the ranks this week. Two reports of bootlegged calls were received, and the information was passed on to various OOs to be on alert. The Chinese shortwave station continues to be heard on 14050 kHz. Chuck also filled in as backup operator for the Friday morning code practice at W1AW one day this week. Leona Adams reports that she received Section Manager nomination petitions from incumbents Jean Priestley, KA2YKN (Southern New Jersey) and Mike Neilsen, W1MPN (Eastern Massachusetts). Petitions were also received from Thomas Valosin, WB2KLD (Northern New York), Arthur Greenberg, K1GBX (Eastern Massachusetts), and Tom Carrubba, KA2D (New York City/Long Island). These petitions are for terms beginning in January, 2007. Nearly two dozen Field Appointments were added to the data base and a dozen Section expense reports were handled. ARISS PR: Rosalie spotted publicity for Amateur Radio in space on the following three Web sites: HYPERLINK "http://www.space.ref.com" www.space.ref.com carried news about hams setting up equipment for the latest school QSO the European Space Agencys Web site posted a schedule of the days duties completed by the ISS crew, including talking via the ISS ham radio equipment to youths the Canadian Space Agencys Web site covered preparations for ham radio QSOs done by the crew. ARISS Updates: One of our members who wants to contribute technical ideas to our SuitSat-2 Team said he has started looking into possibilities for corporate funding to expand ARISS activities. He believes ARISS is doing the right things for the world; he sees the excitement reflected in the kids eyes in the photographs taken during ARISS QSOs. For ARRL Members: An ARRL member wrote to Rosalie saying: I support ARISS to the fullest. Keep up the great work. It is making a difference and is appreciated. ARISS Effect on Schools: Rosalie is working with ARRL Special Service Club South Orange ARA members and students at the University of California-Irvine club to support an ARISS school QSO, thanks to the networking of the Orange Section SM and ACC. International Aspects: At the Yoshinari Junior High School ARISS QSO, 4 TV stations including NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) and five newspapers covered the story. Regulatory Information During the week we worked on PRB-1 related matters in Louisiana, South Carolina and New Hampshire. Working with the VEC we handled a query from some traveling to Vietnam and in need of special documentation to obtain a license. Several inquiries were received about upcoming vanity renewals and two cases requesting information on obtaining a recently deceased amateurs callsign for a club station. General inquiries were handled during the week from members is the Southwestern, Southeastern, Rocky Mountain, Central, Roanoke, Atlantic, Hudson, Great Lakes and New England division. Amateur Radio Education & Technology ProgramMark Spencer This week marks the one year anniversary of performing the ETP coordinator function by telecommuting from California. The Sat688 interface is ready for release to schools. For schools to receive the interface, they simply need to apply for one of the systems on school letter head and attach a copy of their ARISS contact application. The release will be posted on the ARRL web page as soon as the article has been processed. A majority of the costs for this project have been covered by specific contributions exchanged for circuit boards and programmed PICs for the project. Work on the PowerPoint presentations for the Tech License Class is in progress with an anticipated completion date of mid September. The first TI graduate has taken advantage of the Graduate Level Credit opportunity for completing the teachers institute. This will be the test to see how smoothly the administrative procedures for obtaining the credit goes.
