Just a tidbit from the GLD. A few weeks ago I discussed what I thought of FCC's dropping Morse code testing requirements for amateur licensing. Essentially I suggested we shouldn't B&M about it and should go about our business of recruiting new hams, treating all hams simply as hams regarding the license level they hold or the code proficiency they did or did not demonstrate to become licensed. I said it was inappropriate to label fellow hams as no-coders, 20 wpm'ers, Extra-lights, etc. I ended by asking if any of the GLD members had comments on this. I received right at 300 E-mail replies. Of these, 2 expressed the opinion that the loss of code testing presaged the demise of Amateur Radio; whereas, the rest felt hamming can survive and thrive in post-Morse testing days. Quite a number indicated they had passed 13 or 20 wpm tests for their licenses but thought nonetheless that dropping the code test was a good move. 73, Jim Weaver, K8JE, Director ARRL Great Lakes Division 5065 Bethany Rd.
