[arrl-odv:33837] ARRL FCC license renewal notices?

A member accidently let his amateur license lapse, and was wondering why the FCC didn't send him a renewal notice before it expired. I explained that one to him, (the "Paperwork Reduction Act"), then he wondered why he also didn't get a renewal notice from ARRL. I couldn't explain that one. Here's what he sent me: Incidentally, I just did a google search, (which brings up another issue...) where ARRL says on their website that expiration notices are a "benefit of membership"... see http://www.arrl.org/expiration-notices It doesn't specify email or snail mail, but the wording suggests snail mail. If that's no longer the case, that page needs to be updated. I may have received one but I don't think I did. Is this something that Personify broke, or is this an anomaly? I haven't had any other questions about it, but was wondering. Anybody else on ODV had recent issues with this? Thanks! 73; Mike W7VO

I had a local ham report that ARRL did not notify him of his upcoming license expiration. As his expiration was three weeks away, I suggested he phone the ARRL VEC immediately Monday AM. He did and they quickly processed his renewal. Despite the glitch, he did let me know that he was quite pleased with the response. However, it appears something is broken. 73, -Dale WA8EFK On 7/4/2022 4:29 PM, Michael Ritz wrote:

I didn’t get a notice in 2017 when mine was up for renewal. So clearly this process has been broken for a while. Our system may indeed be broken, but I have also found that many licensees seem to ignore updating their address with the FCC. When I sent out hundreds of notices to all hams within a certain radius (by zip code) to request they attend an important antenna hearing I was conducting for a local ham, (the infamous WN3A case) out of many hundreds of 1st class mail notices, TEN PERCENT came back to me with "forwarding order expired". We got the addresses right from the current FCC ULS system too. A local ham, WB2SEB (now W3SEB, as he moved from the Bronx to PA) got a nastygram from the FCC for that. So it’s a ticking time bomb if people just let it be. I believe it was even in an ARRL enforcement bulletin once. To be fair he has some other issues like a felony charge and jamming but it's a risk nonetheless Ria N2RJ ________________________________ From: RBFamiglio@verizon.net <RBFamiglio@verizon.net> Sent: Tuesday, July 5, 2022 9:23:19 AM To: Jairam, Ria, N2RJ (Dir, HD) <n2rj@arrl.org>; Williams, Dale, WA8EFK (Dir, GL) <dale.wms1@frontier.com>; arrl-odv <arrl-odv@reflector.arrl.org> Subject: RE: [arrl-odv:33840] Re: ARRL FCC license renewal notices? What I meant to mention is that other groups, like W5YI, send out courtesy notice postcards. They will not get through to old address either. Tom; Here what's listed as choices on the "OPT IN/OUT" page of the new ARRL website profile pages: ARES E-Letter ARRL Board meeting agendas and minutes ARRL Club News - (monthly notification) ARRL Contest Update (bi-weekly contest newsletter) ARRL Current - (monthly digital notification) ARRL Instructor/Teacher E-Letter (Radio Waves) ARRL Legislative Update ARRL Letter Division and Section News IARU E-Letter (International Amateur Radio Union) Publication Announcements and Special Offers W1AW - DX W1AW - General/Special W1AW - Propagation W1AW - Satellite I don't see anything related to opting in to automatic FCC renewals listed. Tom is correct- Here are my choices on the opt in/ opt out page: Email ARES E-Letter ARRL Board meeting agendas and minutes ARRL Club News - (monthly notification) ARRL Current - (monthly digital notification) ARRL Legislative Update ARRL Letter Division and Section News Notification of license expiration Publication Announcements and Special Offers W1AW - DX W1AW - General/Special W1AW - Propagation There is a notification of license expiration. I do not remember an ARRL notification in 2020, but I probably did not give them enough time. This is getting interesting.... Why doesn't my profile page have the ability to opt in or out for "Notification of license expiration" , as Dr. Boehner's does? I showed you all a copy of what's on my Profile page for OPT IN/OUT. There is something I'm not seeing, somewhere..... I looked at all the profile setting pages, and there is nothing I can easily find to turn on that particular "feature". 73; Mike W7VO

Tom is correct- Here are my choices on the opt in/ opt out page:
ARES E-Letter
ARRL Board meeting agendas and minutes
ARRL Club News - (monthly notification)
ARRL Current - (monthly digital notification)
ARRL Legislative Update
ARRL Letter
Division and Section News
Notification of license expiration
Publication Announcements and Special Offers
W1AW - DX
W1AW - General/Special
W1AW - Propagation
There is a notification of license expiration.
I do not remember an ARRL notification in 2020, but I probably did not give them enough time. I had my calendar set for 90 days prior to expiration and renewed via FCC ULS on the first day I could do so.
Since the upgrade, there is not a direct link to your profile page under your login. I miss that link. It is a bit more difficult to have members navigate to their opt in/opt out page.

Tom;
Here what's listed as choices on the "OPT IN/OUT" page of the new ARRL website profile pages:
ARES E-Letter
ARRL Board meeting agendas and minutes
ARRL Club News - (monthly notification)
ARRL Contest Update (bi-weekly contest newsletter)
ARRL Current - (monthly digital notification)
ARRL Instructor/Teacher E-Letter (Radio Waves)
ARRL Legislative Update
ARRL Letter
Division and Section News
IARU E-Letter (International Amateur Radio Union)
Publication Announcements and Special Offers

I don't see anything related to opting in to automatic FCC renewals listed. Am I missing something somewhere?

ODV, The FCC does not send expiration reminders to licensees in the amateur service. Now that all amateur licensees are required to have a valid email address on file, the FCC might consider sending email reminders if asked. They already automatically email reminders to licensees in some of the commercial wireless services through ULS. Whether to explore this with the FCC is for you guys to decide. With or without FCC email reminders, it may be a help to ARRL if it emailed reminders as another “touch” for members and would-be members. 73, Dave K3ZJ David R.
