[arrl-odv:16748] Wind Generator RF Signal Interference

12 MAY 2008 - 1439 CDT Over a year ago, a close ham friend of mine who is a broadcast radio engineer told me about signal interference caused by the giant wind generators that are now starting to show up in ever larger numbers. Apparently the rotating blades chop up VHF and higher signals to the point where they become garbled. In some rural areas, the companies installing and operating these wind generator farms have to provide an alternate means for receiving TV signals for those people who complain about this problem. Now, I have received a complaint from a ham who is a microwave enthusiast. The situation is made all the worse because these giant wind generators are placed on high elevations, just like many amateur radio installations, public service transmitters and repeaters. For a ham to get "above" this interference he or she would have to construct a tower at least 400 ft. high (assuming the ground elevation is equal). I have not heard about any HF interference complaints. In view of our growing energy problems, I doubt if there is any sort of regulatory relief available and this will make a growing number of amateur radio operators unhappy. However, I think we need to research this issue so we can at least provide solid technical advice, if there is any to be found. - Dick, W9GIG
