[arrl-odv:13503] Re: Legislative Report

Good comments Andy. My heartburn came from the fact we had the same problem with the Chwat Report last year. Since many of you create Word documents, you might find the information in this note useful. Those letters that were pasted into the Chawat & Co. document are the primary cause of the huge file size. There are some techniques for minimizing the file size, however, and I was able to reduce the file to 4 meg with minimal effort. That's still too large, in my opinion. I tried converting it to a PDF and the size was 5 MB (larger than the .doc file when using compressed images). Here is a terrific (short and to the point) guide from The University of Queensland (Australia) on reducing files sizes when Word documents contain image files: http://askit.uq.edu.au/itanswers/microsoftoffice/word/reducing_file_size s.pdf For those who might want to try using PDF compression, the poor man's utility to create PDF files can be had for $9.95 at www.pdf995.com . There is also a free version if you can put up with advertising every time you run it. The full-blown version of Adobe runs in the hundreds of dollars, so this software is a great deal (and I have used it regularly for several years now). -- Andy Oppel, N6AJO Pacific Division Vice Director At 09:30 AM 1/10/2006, you wrote: Dave: Could you please suggest to John Chwat that an 8MB Report either ought to have 8MB of information or should be available in a form that takes less Bandwidth. Given the relative accomplishments of the Navassa/Desecheo folks compared to the Chwat office this past year, making the Report so difficult (slow) to obtain may not be the best idea for Chwat & Co. Apparently, I'm getting testier as the day progresses. Note that there are four annexes to the report. Because of the size of the file (more than 8 MB) I am not sending it by email. Dave K1ZZ
