[arrl-odv:21235] W9BRD SK

Old Timers will remember Rod Newkirk, W9BRD and more recently VA3ZBB, who wrote the QST "How's DX?" column for almost 30 years, 1948-1978. Rod captured the challenge and romance of DX for two generations of amateurs. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/ottawacitizen/obituary.aspx?n=rodney-ne wkirk&pid=161162437#fbLoggedOut Dave K1ZZ

Condolences! I remember awaiting QST with great anticipation of Rod's column back in my SWL/Novice days. How many novices of the time were inspired to upgrade via How's DX? 73 David A. Dave, was Rod the person who introduced the term "Elmer" for a ham radio mentor? 73 - Kay N3KN

Thanks for the reprint, Dave. I wonder if this is something we might work into the announcement of Rod's passing? The message is as relevant to today's ham radio as it was 41 years ago. We YLs call ourselves "Elmira" instead of "Elmer," but the spirit is the same. 73 - Kay N3KN

Kay, I have passed it along to the news hawks. Rod didn't set out to create the term but it stuck.
