My thanks to K5RAV and N5AUS for activating W100AW yesterday. I managed to work them mobile while driving home from the airport in Daytona Beach. Their activation of W100AW on the weekend when the station would not ordinarily be in operation got me thinking. Would there be a possibility of activating W100AW portable from the regional Centennial Events? If so, perhaps state and section conventions could be considered as well so that those Divisions without a regional Centennial event could have an opportunity. If it is possible, I’d like to see the operation be under the auspices of the Division for a given event. If portable operation is possible, I’d anticipate utilizing a comm trailer in the tailgate area of Hamcation to put W100AW on the air on both HF and VHF, thereby giving Technicians an opportunity to work W100AW. Not having been around when the plans for W100AW were conceived, I don’t know if it was to be specifically restricted to the Maxim station without portable operation. If so, please disregard with my apologies. Doug, W100AW/x from the regional events is part of the plan. However, to do more than that would rob the regional events of some of their significance. OK, thanks Dave. Who is coordinating the W100AW operation in Orlando? I’d like to speak with them to see exactly what the plans are. Would there be a possiility of using W1AW at Section/State/Division conventions? On a related note, I see that W1ODV is available. It would make a great PR tool if that callsign could be obtained for use by ODV members in conjunction with events. Doug, we have had to turn down requests for W1AW/x from division conventions this year because there would be too much confusion with the W1AW WAS operations. As trustee I don’t authorize operation from conventions below division level because there are just too many of them. The only exception I have ever made was for Puerto Rico last year because there is so little chance of there ever being a division convention there, but I turned them down this year even though I’m going to be there, and even though they did a bang-up job last year. W1AW/KP4 will be active later in the year. By the way, after the convention if you hear KP3/K1ZZ on the air it’s probably not a bootlegger. Linda and I are staying for an extra week and have rented a cottage on the northern coast. I won’t know the antenna possibilities until we get there but a salt water horizon is always good for RF. 73, Dave K1ZZ From: Rehman, Doug, K4AC Sent: Monday, January 20, 2014 10:25 AM To: Sumner, Dave, K1ZZ; arrl-odv Subject: RE: [arrl-odv:22316] W100AW OK, thanks Dave.
