It wasn't all that long ago that the Board decided it was time to control expenses and eliminate the Vice Directors from attending both of the Board meetings at League expense. It would interesting to see what the projected cost would be for moving the board meeting to another location other than the Newington area versus staying at Newington. Wonder if Barry could give us some estimates? I agree with Jay in that it is also good to get face time with staff before and during the board meetings. - Bill N3LLR _____ From: JIM WEAVER [mailto:k8je@earthlink.net] Sent: Wednesday, October 05, 2005 10:52 PM To: arrl-odv Subject: [arrl-odv:13161] Re: January Meeting I join those who favor moving the coming Annual Meeting to a more-regularly hospitable location. While it is true that individual cities in northern parts of the country could suffer bad weather that would adversely impact travel plans for about one or two who would need to travel, a temporary move would greatly diminish the likelihood that each and every traveler would be disadvantaged as occurred last January. As to staff travel, I agree with others that we would not need to have so many staff members present thanks either to conference calls or to modern communication techniques. Jim W. Either meeting can be moved by Board action as described in the bylaws. From a Pacific Northwest perspective, I favor a location a bit closer such as Dallas, Phoenix, or a warmer (read not much snow) spot. I understand the issues surrounding staff travel but what staff do we really need in attendance? One trip to HQ per year is enough for me! It is a full day of travel to the east coast and, given planning, the air fare can be pretty reasonable to other places.
However, isn't there a rule that says the business meeting needs to be in the Hartford area? For the last two years we have not been fortunate from the weather standpoint. Last January 21 of us were stranded for an extra day due to the airport being closed. I have not discussed this with Barry Shelley, but a guess would be that the cost was in the area of an extra 5K. I know that many of you like to harass the staff, but another location that is not so prone to snow and cold weather (Dallas) might be something you want to consider. What are your thoughts?
