[arrl-odv:15070] Re: QST Delivery Problem in the Pacific Section

We've been around and around on this over the years. Not all members in the Pacific Section agree that QST delivery is a problem the ARRL should be expected to do something about. At least some of them recognize that it's their choice to live on an island thousands of miles from the mainland, that doing so involves some tradeoffs, and they shouldn't be annoyed with the ARRL when their mainland buddies talk about a QST article they haven't seen yet. At the risk of sounding insensitive, I believe this has more to do with Bob Schneider wanting to be perceived as going to bat for "his" members than with any real issue. In any event, if it was an issue in the past it is less so today. QST is mailed to everyone earlier now than was the case a few years ago. I have been told by KH6 amateurs that it often arrives before the first of the cover month. Even when it doesn't, members have electronic access to virtually all of the time-sensitive contents. It's impossible to be precise because of all the military addresses and all the non-resident licensees with "accommodation addresses" in Pacific locations (mainly Japanese and "boat people"), but the percentage of licensees in Hawaii who are ARRL members does not appear to me to be dramatically different from the mainland western states. Dick Flanagan wasn't saying we have an image problem. He was gently pointing out to Bob that by emphasizing QST delivery as an issue, Bob was being part of the membership recruitment problem, not part of the solution. This goes right back to the "image" issue I alluded to in a previous thread. We have an image issue, I don't think that's news to anyone. The question is, what do we need to do about it? I agree that poor delivery if QST is not the only issue. 73, Karl, WA5TMC Dick Flanagan wrote: At 09:14 PM 1/3/2007, bob Schneider wrote: QST delivery to the Pacific Section, especially Hawaii, has been an issue for many years. It is probably the major reason membership numbers are low. It looks like we may have a bigger problem than magazine delivery. Perhaps someone should remind the Pacific Section membership that joining ARRL provides much more than just a magazine subscription. I have been an ARRL Life Member for over thirty-five years and during that entire time I have felt that my QST subscription was just a small part of the benefits I received. If untimely receipt of QST is enough to discourage membership, then perhaps we have a lot more to worry about. 73, Dick -- Dick Flanagan K7VC NV SM k7vc@arrl.org
