[arrl-odv:23199] H.R. 4969 and Washington Visits in September

Greetings. First of all, I want to thank all of the Directors and Vice-Directors who have made arrangements or who are making arrangements for District Office visits on behalf of H.R. 4969 during the August recess. The response from the ARRL team has been fantastic and we will surely meet our goal of cosponsors by mid-September. Those visits are gold. The Keelen Group for their part has done a spectacular job of both strategizing and administrating our effort, both here in Washington and by setting up appointments in the District offices. We are lucky to have them and I will assure you that we are in the best of hands. If you have any trouble scheduling a District Office visit, just e-mail the details to one of the four Keelen pros on this thread and they will fix you up pronto. Now, it is critical that Alex at TKG have an accurate and complete list of those members of the Board who are *coming to Washington in September* during one of the two windows in the first part of September to do Congressional Visits. I know that Kay, Mike Lisenco, David Norris and Dick Isely are coming in and I have heard indirectly that David Woolweaver is planning to come in order to meet with West Gulf Division congressional offices. However, Alex and I have to make absolutely sure that we know the *precise days you will be available to do meetings on the Hill* so that the meetings can be set up in advance and so we can make the best use of your time and ARRL's money. Can you please, right away, respond to this e-mail IF YOU ARE COMING TO WASHINGTON IN SEPTEMBER and let us know what day you are arriving and what time you will be available to do your first and last meeting before heading home. You will NOT want to do more than two full days of this, I will assure you, but two days is also about the minimum to justify the cost of this effort. Can those of you who are coming here to D.C. please confirm that (yes, again, Dick Isely) and the days that you will be ready to work? Thanks. 73, Chris W3KD -- Christopher D. My schedule is in a state of flux at the moment and I won’t know if I can make it until the last minute. I have a case scheduled to go to trial during the same timeframe. There are two cases ahead of us on the docket, but they may very well settle at any point beforehand. There is virtually no chance that my client will settle. If N1ND or TKG can get me a list of the Districts in my Division that we got letters signed for at the Huntsville Convention and those letters can be held until either I come up or it’s clear I can’t, I’ll send emails to members in those Districts asking for an email campaign to those offices. Hopefully that will increase the success rate in obtaining meetings during cold calls. 73, Doug Doug Rehman, K4AC Director Southeastern Division ARRL—The National Association for Amateur Radio® doug@k4ac.com www.arrlse.org <http://www.arrlse.org/> www.facebook.com/arrlse From: arrl-odv [mailto:arrl-odv-bounces@reflector.arrl.org] On Behalf Of Christopher Imlay Sent: Wednesday, August 20, 2014 3:35 PM To: arrl-odv; Olah Alexander; mkeelen; fmccarthy@keelengroup.com; Borg Stephen Subject: [arrl-odv:23199] H.R. 4969 and Washington Visits in September Greetings. Doug, Dan still has those Huntsville letters or else he has sent them but as of yesterday I think they weren't at TKG yet. Dan has not in the past kept records of the letters. I understand your scheduling issue of course and you have to do what makes sense professionally. Good on you for making the effort again. But frankly, a last minute decision to come to D.C. if that is what we have to deal with, is a big problem. These meetings can't be arranged on the fly successfully. It just doesn't work that way. For each one of you coming in, there are *many hours* of time for the TKG guys setting up appointments and moving those already made in order to accommodate others. Even with the access TKG has, which is notable, it is going to be a big huge challenge to get appointments during the last two, short legislative days in September So the sooner we know if you are coming, the better. If it is really going to be a last-minute decision whether to come or not, let them know when you know, but *you should be ready to hear from TKG that your appointments can't be accommodated and be ready to scrap the idea.* It is not worth the cost of the trip to D.C. if you are only going to be able to do three or four meetings while you are here and that is not a good use of your time anyway. 73, Chris W3KD On Wed, Aug 20, 2014 at 3:53 PM, Doug Rehman <doug@k4ac.com> wrote:

Chris: It appears I was inartful in articulating the plan should the trial get postponed. I don’t expect TKG to attempt to get meetings on such short notice. My plan is to repeat the impromptu session that I did last month where I visited 20 offices in a single day (no appointments) with constituent letters in hand and managed meetings in 10 of those offices. I did the last quarter of those visits solo and can do future visits solo as well. By “carpet bombing” via constituent emails those Districts where we have constituent letters available to deliver, there may be enough noise generated to get meetings. Once I know that I am able to go, have a list of Districts where we have letters, and have constituent emails sent, I can attempt to set up meetings myself. (I know firsthand that TKG’s level of access is extraordinary, but they should be concentrating on those Board members that have concrete plans.) 73, Doug K4AC From: Christopher Imlay [mailto:w3kd.arrl@gmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 20, 2014 4:29 PM To: Doug Rehman Cc: arrl-odv; Olah Alexander; mkeelen; fmccarthy@keelengroup.com; Borg Stephen; Henderson, Dan N1ND Subject: Re: [arrl-odv:23199] H.R. 4969 and Washington Visits in September Doug, Dan still has those Huntsville letters or else he has sent them but as of yesterday I think they weren't at TKG yet. Chris: I have notified Matt that I will be in D.C. on September 15, 16 and 17. Those were the dates that he recommended. I am available for any visit that will serve the effort. Hotel rooms in D.C. proper are at a premium. It was very difficult to obtain a reservation. FYI to others who might be making plans. While it's not as convenient as a downtown hotel or one in Crystal City, if you fly to BWI there are reasonably priced hotel rooms available that have shuttle service to and from the airport as well as the Amtrak/MARC station that serves the airport. Take MARC to New Carrollton and the Metro from there to Capitol South.
