[ARRL-ODV:10024] Re: RE Committee Renaming Proposal

Hi Dave! Drop "Member". Thanks. 73, Wade W0EJ
The intent on Thursday afternoon was that the committee be named Programs and Member Services. The word "Member" was inserted during the discussion and that is how it appears in the newly adopted Bylaw 38.
Ordinarily I'm a stickler for not making "corrections" to Articles and Bylaws once they're adopted. That would mean, unless there was a Special Meeting of the Board called to deal with this weighty issue, that Bylaw 38 would remain as amended until July. However, there is an inconsistency between Bylaw 38 and Bylaw 40, where the word "Member" was NOT inserted. Since the proposed amendments were not read out orally to the assembly at the time they were proposed, it is quite possible that a Board member, looking at Bylaw 40, might not have been aware of the proposed wording of Bylaw 38.
Therefore, and because the Minutes have not yet been published, as Secretary I am amenable to resolving the inconsistency either way. I would suggest dropping the word "Member" from Bylaw 38. Not all of the services listed in Bylaw 40 are limited to members.
If any Board member objects to this, please let me know ASAP.

Joel is correct, In the discussion on Thursday evening I suggested that the committee name change shouldn't suggest any decreased attention to Member Services. If the Board is of a mind that P&MS or another version without the ampersand will bother some members, let's change the name.
Perhaps we ought remind ourselves that the Field and Educational Services Department abbreviation when spoken is phonetically "Effen E Ess." Say that fast 3 times. Is this really worth all the email traffic? If so, let's just change the name and move on.

The original name was "Programs & Services". When President Haynie assigned Director Bellows on behalf of A&F, and me on behalf of the Executive Committee to work out a compromise Thursday evening, Jay wanted to add "Member" to the name. So, that was added to the motion that was presented to the board.
I have no personal feeling either way. The committee will still do what the board has assigned regardless of what we call it..... P&S Committee or P&MS Committee.
Programs & Services works fine for me.

The original EC proposal called it "Programs and Services" and according to the info Dave sent out in the notice of Bylaw changes back on December 19, 2003, the A & F proposal also called it "Programs and Services." However, looking at the Board motion that was passed out at the meeting, the Combined Committee Proposal, it is called "Programs and Member Services."
Hum...... somehow that word "Member" got in there along the way.
Wade does bring up a good point about calling it "Member Services and Programs." Not a bad idea perhaps, or maybe we should go back to "Programs and Services." I could go with either.
