Most modern radios can have a “MARS Modification” performed, opening the radio to below the 10m band, and just about anywhere else as well. CBers have been using ham gear for years. Anyone knowledgeable would never buy a Ranger. They’re for sale at truck stops, or at least used to be. There have been retailers who have offered the MARS mod “service” over the years. I believe that Texas Towers used to modify the TS440S and Burghardt did some of the newer Yaesu’s. As a repair center, maybe they still do. Gigaparts offers the MARS modification as a paid service! I believe it is $79 or so for the IC7300 and as much as $149 for other radios. They state: “we do not require proof of license to order this service” There’s 11 different “levels” of mods that can be ordered depending on radio brand. It’s not clear which level is for which radio. https://www.gigaparts.com/gigaparts-mars-mod-level-11.html From: arrl-odv <arrl-odv-bounces@reflector.arrl.org> On Behalf Of Bob Famiglio, K3RF via arrl-odv Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2022 12:12 PM To: 'David Norris' <k5uz@icloud.com>; Jairam, Ria, N2RJ (Dir, HD) <n2rj@arrl.org> Cc: arrl-odv <arrl-odv@reflector.arrl.org> Subject: [arrl-odv:33900] Re: WalMart Wants To Play Ranger has been selling this stuff for years. And the thing is, they are not that great in terms of real technical specs either. No ham would pay that price when they can get a quality ICOM for not much more. Unfortunately, someone here in the greater Philly area said he was able to “open up” the venerable IC-7300. If true, I suspect it is the radio of choice for “Free-banders”. Nothing new but now that spectrum is open much of the time for the next several years. Lots of screaming “visitors” coming soon to the low end of 10 meters near you. There are several amateur and cb retailers who sell on the marketplace. With that said this is an 11 meter radio, disguised as an amateur radio, no question. Now does Walmart want to “play?” Maybe not directly but they clearly have sellers who do.
