I live up the road (284) from you in NY. I would like to bring to your attention the need to have relevant articles in QST. Frankly, I just can’t bear to read another construction article about a tuna for 10 (QRP TX in a tuna can). A fellow ham friend wrote an article about how to be able to use hotspots while in a hotel and it was rejected. Being a repeater owner and VOIP experimenter since its inception, I found the article very relevant. I have not seen very many current technology articles in the magazine. Nothing on VOIP. I can’t remember the last repeater article either.
After all, the ARRL’s mission is:
ARRL's Mission Statement: To advance the art, science, and enjoyment of Amateur Radio.
If we do not embrace newer technologies, we mind as well just go back to spark.
This is my second year back as an ARRL member. I left some 20 years ago because the league took the side of an uncoordinated repeater that was interfering with one of mine. They did this because the other repeater group was an affiliated club. After a year and a half battle, the FCC decision was in my favor, and the other repeater had to vacate the frequency.
I would like to support the league however it needs to support emerging and new technology in its magazine, and its decisions.

Thanks for your email. I can understand your frustration, and Al’s. Nobody enjoys being told “no,” especially after having put forth considerable effort. As you point out, QST does indeed need more articles about newer technologies, and we’re sorry this particular manuscript didn’t make the cut. Al has published with us several times before, and if he continues submitting manuscripts (which we hope he will), it’s entirely possible that he will again.

Al forwarded me your email since I was the one who suggested that he submit it. I am very disappointed that it was rejected because I felt it was very relevant to today’s world. There is life out here besides a “tuna for 10”. In my opinion, the league does very little to address newer technologies. There is a very large base of amateurs that use hotspots for Allstar, DMR, Echolink, and IRLP. There are virtually no articles that address this. I also cannot tell you when the last time I saw any repeater articles.
Please keep mind that there are many Amateurs that want to see an article like this…

The committee evaluates articles according to a variety of criteria. Because of the sheer volume of incoming manuscripts, we cannot provide detailed critiques of every submission, or offer advice on how articles may be improved. We regret we are unable to carry on further correspondence regarding your submission.
I encourage you to submit your manuscript to other Amateur Radio publications. Even though an article may not be a good fit for our periodicals, it might be attractive to another publisher. Each magazine has its own editorial needs and requirements.
Of course, you are always welcome to submit new articles on other topics for review. I look forward to seeing more manuscripts from you in the future.
