So sad to hear! I had dinner with Fred at the last live Visalia DX convention. It was the first time I’d actually met him in person, although he is in many of my contest logs. A true and humble gentleman. There will be an extra prayer for him tonight.

Oh, no. Fred, is someone I've worked and met for many years. I worked him just a few weeks ago in a contest. A great ambassador for Amateur Radio. He did a lot of positive things for individuals. And as Ria said, Fred was in ARRL's corner! This is such sad news.

Subject: [arrl-odv:34427] Fred Laun, K3ZO

Fred has been in ICU for over a week and today I was told that he's being taken off life support.

Fred was not only an avid contester but also a U.S. information officer for many years. He famously suffered at the hands of Argentinian Marxist Guerillas after being accused of being a spy due to his ham radio equipment and antennas (David Sidall talked about this a few months ago) in an attempted kidnapping. He is a good friend and supporter of ARRL.

Read an article from NCJ about him: https://ncjweb.com/features/sepoct15feat.pdf
