Here is the Hill visit report for the week ending September
14.
Senator
John Sununu – Thursday, September 13
We met with Adam
Hechavarria of Senator Sununu’s (R-NH) office. His boss sits on the
Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. Adam is the
legislative correspondent who handles Telecom for his boss. Adam was very well
versed in amateur radio, and very knowledgeable about BPL and
interference. He spoke about the Manassas
test site, and explained that BPL has not gained a lot of popularity in the
North East. Because BPL is not a big player in the broadband arena, he
didn’t see the interference problem as much of an issue. I of
course spoke about our view, and suggested that Congress be “proactive”
rather “reactive” should BPL gain momentum – and I mentioned
the DirecTV offerings. I reinforced that we are not opposed to BPL, just
the interference potential. Adam admitted that his boss is not a
proponent of studies, and generally does not cosponsor or sponsor
“study” bills. I asked if his boss would oppose the bill
should it be included in a larger package, and he said he likely did not think
his boss would have a problem with the study. He asked that I keep him
posted on the status of S. 1629.
