The traffic stations have become essentially obsolete. One of them broadcasted the same message about Obama's inauguration for 8 years.

Matt Blaze (WB2SRI) noticed it and it's only when he tweeted it out did people notice.

Even when I had a car with AM, the ones here were off the air.

Most people today use Waze and google maps for traffic.

Here in both OR and WA the transportation people transmit warning messages to drivers on either 1640 or 530 KHz, or thereabouts. When you see blinking lights on the roadside sign it's a message to tune your radio to the appropriate frequency for the warning message. Vehicles that do not have AM radios in them cannot get the messages.  I'm sure other states do that as well.

That said, I'm sure they also have the information available on their websites, or maybe even an app, but one isn't usually surfing the web while driving, unless of course, one owns a Tesla and it's doing the driving.

Sorry Ria, I had to put that in there. ;-)

We know the real story (problem) here is that those vehicles cannot suppress the RFI they generate.  In the range .5 MHz to 1.5 MHz (and other parts of the spectrum) they are individual RFI polluters.  AM radios lasting value to the public is information dissemination, not music anymore.

Dear ODV Members:

I regret this story is behind the Wall Street Journal’s paywall, but seven former FEMA administrators have sent a petition to Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg asking that Ford and Tesla not drop AM radio from their electric vehicles. https://www.wsj.com/articles/electric-vehicles-need-am-radio-former-emergency-officials-argue-9e69e297

Among the former FEMA Directors saying access to AM radio in emergencies is critical is ARRL member Craig Fugate, KK4INZ.
