Joyce,
I just listened to Mike's out-of-office message. It is
personable and says what would be expected for a typical staff member. As
national head of the ARRL emergency response team I don't believe Mike is a
typical staff member, though. I would expect his phone number would be
covered 24x7x365. This does not mean that Mike should not have the
privilege of being away, but that he should always have an appropriately
responsible person to call identified on the message "in case of
emergency." I would expect the backup person du jour would be
available whenever Mike is not. There are a variety of ways to
achieve this coverage. For example, years ago as a resource
for our poison control centers nationally I carried a pager.
When I left the area, the pager was passed to someone else in the department who
had the proper background to deal with emergency situations.

I'm a
bit concerned over the Out Of Office Reply messages that Mike Corey has
consistently been putting up. I don't think this is the message that
we (ARRL) should be sending...."hello, thanks, but no one is
home!" or..."oh yeah, I'm not here, but you can contact my
Assistant" I'd rather receive nothing!!!
I'm
sorry if this comes off sarcastically, but I'm concerned. Disasters don't
take vacations, and good volunteers are hard to find. This is what is
frustrating the hell out of the SEC in NNJ, as well as a few others in
the Section.
Tell
me I'm not the only one!
