Good Afternoon fellow Board of Directors. The Minot, North Dakota region has opened up a Discovery Center where the Souris Valley Amateur Radio Club (SVARC) was selected to offer Wireless Radio Communication demonstrations and hands-on experiences. SVARC was awarded a $10,000 grant to install an Amateur Radio interactive display and demonstration for the youth of the northwest region of North Dakota. We purchased a Yaesu FTDX-101D HF/50MHz 100W SDR Transceiver for HF operation, an Icom IC-9700 VHF/UHF All Mode D-STAR Transceiver to demonstrate communications with Amateur Radio satellites and the International Space Station. We have purchased a HF antenna system and built UHF/VHF Quadrifiler Helix antennas to support the satellite and ISS communications. Also, we received current donated computers to demonstrate Ham Radio Deluxe, Logbook of the World, FT-8/FT-4 digital modes, satellite tracking programs, etc. The reason why I have presented this information to you is to find out if any of our Board members have or know of a 10 to 15 minute computer video presentation we can put up on the Big Screen to get a 10 to 14 year old interested in Amateur Radio. The Discovery Center brings in middle school and older students from a 100 mile radius and they would like us to show a 10 to 12 year old level, “Introduction to Amateur Radio”. If you have something that could fit this request, please email me at w0nd@arrl.org Appreciate your help! Lynn Nelson – W0ND ARRL Vice Director Dakota Division MINOT, N.D. – Senator John Hoeven today marked the grand opening of the Magic City Discovery Center, an interactive children’s museum that provides science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) educational opportunities for Minot families, including those stationed at Minot Air Force Base. US Senator John Hoeven through his role on the Senate Defense Appropriations Committee secured $6.3 million for the construction of the new 22,000 sq. ft. facility. Combined with local funding, the total project cost came to $14 million. “This Discovery Center is a world-class facility and one of a kind,” explains Executive Director Wendy Keller. “The signature Magic Climber complete with a B-52 bomber atop an oil derrick is sure to captivate the young minds that will be visiting the center to discover, create, explore, and learn in our 12 unique galleries and over 150 hands-on learning exhibits.” This was a $20 million project which was funded by private donations, the Department of Defense, Minot Parks, the City of Minot, and the ND Department of Public Instruction.
