Dear ODV Members: The CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act was signed into law yesterday, Friday, March 27. Like all multifaceted legislation enacted on short notice, there is much to digest and authenticate. One provision I have seen through trade journals is that for the year 2020 any individual or household tax paying unit (i.e., filing single or joint) can claim up to $300. of a tax deduction to a 501[c](3) non-profit organization, regardless whether they itemize or use the standard deduction. For the approximately 90% of taxpayers who now file using the standard deduction, this is a big incentive. The CARES Act also relaxes the limit on charitable contributions for itemizers-increasing the amount that can be deducted from 60% of adjusted gross income to 100% of gross income.
