Reported by Dave Patton, NN1N
Ohio Section Manager Frank Piper, KI8GW, has announced that he will be stepping down from his position as of January 1, 2014, due to a recent increase of job responsibilities along with family commitments. Piper, of Pickerington, has been the Ohio Section
Manager since July of 2009 when he was first appointed to the position to fulfill the term of office after Joe Phillips, K8QOE, who became a Silent Key. Piper was re-elected as Section Manager two more times in 2010 and again in 2012.
Scott Yonally, N8SY, of Mansfield, will be appointed as the Ohio Section Manager, effective January 1, to complete the current term of office that concludes on September 30, 2014. According to the Rules and Regulations of the
Field Organization, when a vacancy in the office of Section Manager occurs between elections, the position is filled by appointment. Membership and Volunteer Programs Manager Dave Patton, NN1N, in consultation with Great Lakes Division Director Jim Weaver,
K8JE, have announced Yonally’s upcoming appointment.
Steve Ewald traveled to Columbus on November 8th and 9th to represent ARRL Headquarters and present a talk at the
very successful All Ohio ARES Conference. Ohio Section Emergency Coordinator Matt Welch, W8DEC, Ohio Section Manager Frank Piper, KI8GW, and their team organized and sponsored the event that was held at the Ohio Fire Academy in Reynoldsburg. There were 145
attendees including Great Lakes Division Vice Director Dale Williams, WA8EFK, and Ohio Assistant Section Manager Scott Yonally, N8SY.
Chuck Skolaut compiled and forwarded the ARRL Monthly Monitoring System report to the IARU Region 2 Monitoring Coordinator. Documentation was received regarding individuals operating in the “freeband” portion of the frequencies below 10 meters which was
then forwarded to the FCC.
A report of continuous CQ 10-10 being heard on 28.425 MHz prompted follow up by OOs. It was later determined that the identification given was a recording rather than a live transmission, and the investigation continues. The carrier previously reported
on 3.501 MHz ceased without identification of a source. Questions dealt with included Technician privileges, antenna restrictions, operating overseas and Technician credit being grandfathered.
