Katie's letter, which Harold forwarded to ODV earlier today, included the following:

I apologize for what seems to be junk mail from MetLife. The announcement letter included details of a group insurance program from MetLife, with whom ARRL has partnered to offer this new membership benefit. We provided them the name and address of members that had not opted-out from receiving commercial mailings.

We respect your choices. ARRL members may opt out of commercial mailings at anytime. ARRL membership applications and renewal applications include a check box for members to choose to opt-out of non-ARRL related mailings. Members and Life Members can also make this selection anytime by contacting ARRL.

Your ARRL membership record has been coded to ensure that your name and address will not be included in any future commercial mailing list. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for the change to take effect, allowing for any direct mail already in process.

In other words, if someone complains we code them as "no commercial mailings." If they contact Katie or anyone in Circulation and ask to be opted out, we'll do it right away. Otherwise they have opportunity to opt out when they join or renew.

Tom,

Tnx.  I believe the opt out that I was hunting is the second one on your
list, only -- http://www.arrl.org/members-only/memdata.html?modify=1.  The
first link address e-mail or spam, but not "hard copy" material.  Several of
my members have asked how to opt out of promotional material on "outside"
companies.

Jim

There's a link off the main members-only page at the top right.
     http://www.arrl.org/members-only/

It's at the bottom of the page where each member can change address, choose
email newsletter options, etc
