Yep. For the 7300, one diode removal. To the elegant, needs are JIS screwdrivers, a soldering iron and perhaps magnifying lenses. To the butchers, needs are Philips screwdrivers with a lot of pressure, and small diagonal cutters. I can’t believe they charge $60-120 for 10 minutes worth of work. However, damages are not covered by warranty. Guess it is more like an insurance policy. I certainly do not want to see this go away. We need to (responsibly) modify our radios for MARS and SHARES. Unfortunately, some people modify primarily for 11 meters. I remember when Bob Allison in the ARRL lab was testing out an Alinco transceiver that was clearly a rebranded CB/Freeband radio. I laughed when I saw it. I asked why he was reviewing it. Bob said it was being marketed as an amateur radio unit. The radio had a frequency display, but also a two digit display next to it (for channel numbers). There have been retailers who have offered the MARS mod “service” over the years. I believe that Texas Towers used to modify the TS440S and Burghardt did some of the newer Yaesu’s. As a repair center, maybe they still do. Gigaparts offers the MARS modification as a paid service! I believe it is $79 or so for the IC7300 and as much as $149 for other radios. They state: “we do not require proof of license to order this service” There’s 11 different “levels” of mods that can be ordered depending on radio brand. And the thing is, they are not that great in terms of real technical specs either. No ham would pay that price when they can get a quality ICOM for not much more. Unfortunately, someone here in the greater Philly area said he was able to “open up” the venerable IC-7300. If true, I suspect it is the radio of choice for “Free-banders”.
