Not necessarily "worried" Mickey, I only mention it as I felt it was pertinent to the discussion. And yes, easy enough to get a transcript and find out exactly what was said.Mark, HDXOn Tue, Jan 12, 2021 at 1:59 PM Mickey Baker <fishflorida@gmail.com> wrote:If we are now worried about a random partial statement by an unknown guest on the Rush Limbaugh show, we need to examine our own filters. It is easy enough to listen to these shows, they're generally all recorded and available for playback.Paranoia and hyperbole are what people expect to hear when they listen to talk radio generally.Everyone is aware that Glenn Beck is/was a ham? The mounting erroneous references to the use of Ham Radio among protestors are going to hurt us. If we do not challenge these citations, we run the risk that “Ham Radio” could become the catch phrase for any nefarious use of two-way radios. Imagine our law abiding members being questioned by people outside our community that, “Oh, you’re one of those?” after hearing that Amateur Radio was somehow involved with troublemakers. It will tarnish our image as emergency communicators and in recruiting youth through STEM programs. By not even attempting to clarify the record, it will appear that we are complicit in condoning the use of Amateur Radio frequencies for events which can lead to violence.
While I understand the hesitancy to take a proactive stance in advance of any potential trouble next week, I vehemently disagree that we should disregard existing incorrect references in mainstream media and prominent social media. The remark Vice Director Tharp heard on Rush Limbaugh should be addressed. According to several sources, the Rush Limbaugh show is heard by15.5 million listeners per week. That’s 5% of the U.S. population. If the remarks of Limbaugh’s guest host are not countered, the association of Ham Radio and illicit activity will be imbedded in listeners’ minds. What are our advertisers which manufacture HTs thinking if the public is associating their products with this movement? Wouldn’t they expect us to take a strong stand against a misleading description that this movement embraces Amateur Radio?
Not only should we have a media release ready which disavows our affiliation with these groups, but either staff should monitor and engage media personnel for a retraction and correction, or ARRL should hire a PR firm temporarily to distance ourselves. I would also recommend that we place a prominent disclaimer on the main page of our website through at least next Wednesday so anyone who may come to our website after doing a search will know that Amateur Radio is not part of an anti-government movement. Ignoring the problem will only lead to further problems for us all.

The guest host for Rush Limbaugh just talked about communicating by ham radio and then said "and then you won't be able to buy a ham radio" I honestly missed the first part of the statement.
FYI.....
They say any PR is good PR, but perhaps not in this case.

Yes, Bud’s right. We might want something inventoried for various scenarios, hopefully none of which we will need. The last thing one wants to be on is an unexpected call from a legit media inquiry with a horrible headline and need comment in 1 minute or less. Someone likely is doing this already I suspect. A “Can I get back to you in 10?” usually meets with a “no – cannot do.” Or we cannot reach the reporter later. That will be reported as we had no comment by air/press time.

I agree that we do nothing outwardly at this time, but I don’t believe that should preclude us from quietly preparing a news release to have in (y)our hip pocket “just in case”. Only a few individuals need to be involved in the preparation. It would seem a lot better to do the critical word-smithing in advance, rather than in hasty reaction to a news story whose timing we don’t control.

From feedback I’ve received in writing and via phone, the consensus is that we do nothing.
The mechanisms for served agencies to request assistance are already in place. If they need assistance they will request it and our members will respond.
Going beyond that may spotlight the events. Our comments could cause members who wouldn’t have had a thought of getting involved to jump up and take unwelcome action.
Thanks for your fast response!
