When we tried electronic voting a few years ago, the participation rate was very low. This was not because it was an antiquated process—we used the same vendor as does IEEE, I believe. One big difference from what is being suggested is that we did not actively use e-mail reminders, though the vendor did offer that service (at a price, of course). The process at that time also permitted people to vote via paper, since it was thought that there were too many members who would feel uncomfortable voting electronically, or who didn’t have computer access. I wouldn’t discourage a new look at electronic voting, but please don’t assume that the previous attempt used a flawed process. Instead, it appears that there is something about the comfort of our members with the electronic process that inhibited their participation. And admittedly, as I recall none of the races were hotly contested. BTW not all elections are low turnout. In 2018 we had 45% here. Not where I would have liked to have seen it but higher than usual.

Yes, I recall the problems with the 2012 election, however electronic voting has advanced considerably since then, both in integrity of process and in acceptance. As for the low participation rate, regularly scheduled email blast to members leading up to the ballot deadline should, in my opinion, increase participation. It's been 7 years since the last attempt; perhaps it's time to look at it again.

I do think we need to allow online voting as an option.
When we last had electronic voting in 2012 I seem to recall the process being fill out a word doc and email it. Wtf? Many were frustrated with the process and as such did not vote from what I was told. (This election was in the Hudson division as you may recall).
Fast forward to 2019 and we can do better. Online systems are used by other organizations including shareholder board proxy votes. Enable multi factor auth for enrollment and it can be kept secure.
