Oh, and I ran AM on 6 meters for a number of years with a homemade KW (pair of 4-400's) laying on my bedroom floor. I tore up every TV set and church PA system for miles in my little town at the foot of the Ozark Mountains. We were on the fringe of TV reception which made matters worse. My Dad would get telephone calls from miles away.

My first phone QSO was on AM. Crystal controlled on 40 meters. I can still remember to this day how excited I was. I rode my bicycle home from school at lunch to check and see if my general license had arrived in the mail. It did, and I got on 40 meters AM to make my first phone QSO during my lunch period.
Am I that old? Geez.... But it was GREAT!

I was invited to go to W1AW but after the hoosick hamfest it was just too much driving...
Maybe next time.
BTW I do run āheavy metalā here but modern gear - SDR and LDMOS amp running class āAABā which is closer to class A but has AB efficiency. I sometimes get on AM, encouraged into the dark side by a few friends.
Was also nice to hear Timtron on (WA1HLR, of WBCQ fame). He was quite strong here, but a bit wide.

I want to let you know what a great job you and the people involved in the AM Rally did! What a success. I was so impressed by the ARRLās overall support for the event that I became a member again. Please tell upper management to keep it going and AMer support for the League will pay big dividends over time.
After years of anti-AM sentiment by the āold guardā (now mostly gone) Iām pleased to see the League embracing the mode again. Itās been several years now of good AM press so you have stood the test of time.
I will be doing some posts encouraging others to renew their memberships as well as talking it up on the airwaves.
BTW, Ed Hare, W1RFI was my first novice CW contact in 1964. We became buddies back then. Tell him WN1DGK says āhiā to WN1CYF (The Kid) and that he has done an impressive job as ARRL Lab Mgr over the last 30? years. Ham Radio has played a big role in many of our lives.
