Great idea, and if the “prize” is to be mailed, it’s much cheaper to mail a coupon than a book!!!  Also, a gift cert will increase traffic in the store and may result in additional purchases.

Subject: [arrl-odv:17546] Hamfest Coupons

Hi,

I am passing this message from Diane Petrilli and Bob Inderbitzen to ODV.   We have had a lot of internal thinking and discussion about this policy and we believe that this is a better way to go than our current system.

ARRL currently provides free book door prizes for ARRL-sanctioned hamfests and conventions. Beginning March 1, 2009, we will substitute the physical books with gift certificates closely totaling the retail value of the books previously provided (1 - $50 and 2 - $25 certificates). Events that sponsor a VE session will receive an additional $25 gift certificate. Making this change will

(1) reduce the shipping cost of hamfest and convention packages,

(2) permit certificate holders to select a book they want (and don’t already have), and

(3) bring more visitors to the ARRL e-store.

In addition, the coupons will be coded, so we will be able to gather valuable marketing information to help us tailor future book promotions.
