Media & Public Relations

Reported by Allen Pitts, W1AGP

Hurricane Isaac resulted in few media hits for Amateur Radio as there were few instances of priority or emergency traffic passed.  While some media noted that hams were providing reports to HWN and NWS, these were a mention at best.  Once again there was little timely information coming into HQ from the field on any deployments.  A request from the Weather Channel to speak with a ham in the storm area was referred to the LA PIC, but at this time we have not heard of any follow-up.

Contact! for September has been posted and sent out on the PR email reflector and the media hits for August posted to the website.  A special version of the ARRL Centennial Convention press release, one intended for media outside of the Amateur Radio community, has been sent out to business related papers and media in the greater Hartford region.

On Tuesday, August 21, ballot counting for two Section Manager elections took place.  Leona Adams, Steve Ewald, and Jo-Anne Arel were on hand to count ballots and handle administrative duties.  In Connecticut, incumbent Section Manager Betsey Doane, K1EIC, of Shelton, was re-elected.  In Western New York, John Mueller, K2BT, of Falconer, was elected Section Manager for the first time.  Terms of office begin October 1.

Puerto Rico will be getting a new Section Manager starting on October 1.  Rene Fonseca, NP3O, of Fajardo, will be taking over from Roberto Jiminez, KP4AC, who has been Section Manager since 2007.  Jiminez decided not to run for another term of office.

The following incumbent ARRL Section Managers did not face opposition and were declared elected for their next two-year terms of office beginning October 1, 2012: Ed Stuckey, AI7H, Idaho; Skip Jackson, KSĜJ, Minnesota; Lynn Nelson, WĜND, North Dakota; Frank Piper, KI8GW, Ohio; Kevin O’Dell, NĜIRW, Oklahoma; David Fowler, K4DLF, Southern Florida; Fred Kleber, K9VV, US Virgin Islands. Chris Stallkamp, WĜADZ, will start an 18-month term of office in South Dakota.

Chuck Skolaut attended the Kansas State Convention in Salina on August 19.  News from the previous week indicated that a new Official Observer from Missouri has joined the Field Organization.  The monthly ARRL Monitoring System report was compiled and forwarded to the IARU Region 2 Coordinator.  In addition, the monthly Official Observer summary was sent out to all OOs, OOCs, and Section Managers.

Leona Adams reports that Phil Temples, K9HI, has been nominated to run for another term of office as the Eastern Massachusetts Section Manager.  Also, Leona has sent out Field Organization Reports to Section Managers to assist them in record keeping.

Sincerely Compiled by,
