Dear ODV Members:
As Roanoke Division Director Boehner has said, it was a privilege for Jim and me to represent the League at Harry Dannal’s funeral in Charlottesville, Virginia this past weekend.
For those who may not be as familiar with Harry and his accomplishments, here’s a quick recap:
Perhaps most revealing since Harry’s passing have been the stories of how unassuming and mild mannered he was. Jim and I heard several tales of interactions with Hams who had
no idea he had been President of ARRL. We learned from Harry’s son Bob, W2GG, during the eulogy that Harry ended every conversation with his wife, Kay, who preceded him in 2016, with “73 and 88”.

Mickey,
Thanks for the good words.
I was fortunate to meet Harry while he was still doing well on our FD trips in 2018. I heard from a few people at Dayton this year that he had fallen, hit his head, and wasn’t
doing well. When we heard of his passing, Bill offered to go, but I really felt we both needed to be there. It was an honor to represent the Division and the ARRL at his funeral proceedings.
You are fortunate to have a QCWA chapter. I’m a life member of the national, but all QCWA in my state has now dried up. The main chapter closed and a newly formed one did not
last long.
I am very happy that you were able to pass my information on to your QCWA chapter. Harry was quite a ham and was apparently the only one that was president of both the ARRL
and QCWA.
I did not attend the burial, but someone did take a picture of his headstone and sent it to me. He was buried alongside his wife who passed away several years ago, with the
inscription “Together Forever”. And yes, on his side under his name, was the ARRL logo.

Jim, and all,
I went to the QCWA Chapter 111 meeting today… several attendees moved here from Long Island after retirement. When I arrived, the group was discussing Harry and their past personal experiences with him…
Jim, after the chat subsided, I told the group that you and Bill had attended. I read your two paragraphs starting "I'm not a fan..." aloud to the group. The feedback was positive, with these guys talking about modifying their own plans...
Excellent prose which described the way Harry will be remembered. I hope you don't mind that I shared this with these people who remembered Harry fondly.
Thanks for representing and the feedback.

Mickey N4MB
