I don't know about that Mike. Right now in San Diego, it is about 70 degrees, no clouds in the sky, with a gentle breeze coming from the ocean...........
and in August..well, it may get up to about 75 with the same conditions.

So, how many of you folk are going to come to my Convention to see this in person ...

Jim,
Thanks for the additonal info. We should know what is new and different that Rob Vincent has to offer. Perhaps you, Tom or Mike can update us after August 14. Two and one half hours though?? Maybe you can take turns or pick up a handout.
The media likes this stuff and municipalities probably like it even more. If some YCCC guys like it, that is the real test.

Hi Howie,
The boxboro convention people called me a few weeks ago asking if I would put him on as a presenter at Yankee Clipper Contest Club (YCCC) meeting at the convention on August 14th. I declined because we already had in place someone to speak on antennas plus he wanted 2 1/2 hours (which would have absorbed almost all speaker time) to present his invention. But the convention people are setting him up with time he wanted and thus he will be a major presenter at Boxboro. So you will probably be hearing more about his antenna.

There is not enough engineering content in this writing by a news reporter to suspect there is some new technology. If a US patent is issued there may be reason for some concern. I am skeptical and I am not one to overlook new technology. I did a brief Google search and did not find much that would correlate in a professional way but it looks like he is a member and K1DFT.
There was a series of excellent articles years ago in QST by Jerry Sevick, W2FMI on short vertical antennas and yes there are tradeoffs in efficiency and pattern compared to a quarter wave or longer vertical. Also the necessary distance to maintain compliance to Minimum Permissible Exposure requirements is increased considerably.

And if it doesn't prove true, this article could haunt us for a very long time ;-) After all, it could be used to prove:
1 - hams don't need big antennas 2 - if they claim otherwise, it's because they aren't up on the latest technology
How would you counter this at an appeals board hearing?

If this proves to be true, we need only worry about BPL!
