Unfortunately we don’t have quantitative information. All I have to go on is what is shared anecdotally by instructors.
Structurally there is an issue with quantitative information—exam sessions are separate activities from classes. Exam stats are reported to the VEC and not
in any way linked to classes from a reporting standpoint. Instructors who schedule exam sessions in connection with their classes have the best information but we have no formalized way of capturing that information. Nor do we capture any information about
the classes that are held and enrollments or completion of classes. Establishing a reporting mechanism and database for collecting information on classes is one of the requests that has been made by the Education committee of the PSC.
That being said, I tend to hear from instructors who are feeling successful after honing the instructional format they are using for the particular needs of
their community. Instructors who report usually claim 90+% pass rates. The formats used vary pretty widely.

very well done report..
concise and thoughtful..
As a side question - is there any quantitative information regarding the relative success (PASS) rates compared to instruction modes and durations..?
I'm sure that we would all prefer that new licensees really knew the materials, the fact remains that 99%+ of our learning happens AFTER we receive our Tech license (and certainly during the upgrade process to General/Extra). Operating
and continued study contribute greatly to that life-long learning (that's what makes Ham Radio such a great hobby). I know that the thrill of Amateur Radio (for me) didn't start until after I got my FCC license and was able to operate - that first test was
just a necessary "evil". And that was in the days when kids (and adults) had fewer distraction - today.. well, you know..
So with that in mind - any ideas on what instructional mode has the best overall results..?
best,
Mike

You will find attached the report as requested by motion Frenaye 1 from the July 2013 Board Meeting. Tom has reviewed the report and he has recommended that it be
sent to all Board Members. I agree with his recommendation.
This report was written by Debra Johnson, K1DMJ, the Manager of our Education Services Department. Debra put a lot of thought and research into this report and I
found that it contains some excellent information and recommendations.
The Motion asked “That staff be directed to investigate the feasibility, benefits, and costs of preparing training materials crafted for shorter
training sessions, such as weekend, 3 day , 4 day, evening etc.”
You can direct any questions or comments directly to Debra who I have cc’ed on this email.
